Rear Axle refurbish

I am replacing wheel bearings, seals and brakes on my 1981 fj40.
Is it necessary to remove the rear axle backing plate (by removing the studs) and replace the gasket or just leave it and reinstall the axle?

I have the FSM. Doesnt really address it. Just wondered what most people did when tearing down the axles to replace seals and bearings.
The rear axle kot from SOR comes with the gaskets.

WhenI rebuilt my 71 rear axle I inspected the bearing races and they looked good so I left it and only replaced the seals.
The early axles are different than your 1981 in that the races are pressed on the axle rather than an integral part of the axle. If your races look and feel good ie no noticable wear I would leave well enough alone.

semi floatig axle. You are right, the race is and integral partof the axle.
