I'm currently working on restoring an 1977 SA FJ43 that has all the problems that you would expect from a farm vehicle with numerous improvised repairs. I had been working towards installing 80+ style single cylinder drum brakes on the rear semi-float axle with adapters made by @cruisermatt. Upon teardown it was noted that the PO installed some unknown brand of drums and drum backing plates and hacked the housing-mounted backing plate tabs in the process (pics below).
I'm debating replacing the axle housing with another that has the tabs intact versus finding a shop that would cut the tabs off my current axle housing and weld replacement tabs. Does anyone have experience welding on new tabs?
I'd like to continue on my path of putting the 80+ style of drum brakes on this project vs switching to discs or doing an axle swap from another series since I already have all the parts to complete the job. Additionally I just sent out the 3rd member to East Coast Gear Supply due to some chipped gear teeth so all I would need is a replacement housing and not the axles or 3rd member,
Any input would be appreciated.
