HELP!

My '97 80 is in the Harris Teeter parking lot - the starter has been going out on it - but it always eventually starts. Suspect the contacts in the starter need to be replaced.

This time can't get it started - just clicks - lights and battery are good. Anyway to bypass the starter or am I doomed to call a tow truck?? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

William

Howdy! Are you SURE that it is the starter? Clicking indicates that it could be a battery problem. STARTING takes way more juice than lights and stuff. Try jump starting from another rig and see if that makes it go. John

Pretty sure. It's been doing this for a month or so or longer actually. I feel stupid that I didn't get it fixed. Don't expect anyone to feel sorry for me - I deserve this - just need to try and get it out of Harris Teeter's parking lot.

Usually clicks for 10 or 15 tries then fires right up. After driving for awhile then a little more stubborn.

I was gonna replace the starter but a guy at Toyota parts suggested it was just the contacts. Haven't had a chance to tear into it myself yet. I'm going to go try a hammer on the starter.

Thanks,
William

I'll betcha your right about the contacts . . .

. . .you'll spend more time removing / replacing the starter unit than the contact swap takes....
and the contacts are way cheap ( 15 ish bucks) . . .Yea Mr. Toyota : 3 sizes fits all....and the 3 sizes are for the most part, interchanable...so 1 fits all...

Thanks for all the help. I did a search while I was waiting on responses.

Took a hammer to the starter - and she fired right up. Have her back in the driveway - and plan on addressing the contacts on Monday.

More PM whilst you are in there...

Do the plunger while you are in there also!

You were lucky. You should quit driving the vehicle until you can replace the starter contacts and the plunger. If you cannot stop driving it then pull the starter, clean up the contacts, reset them per the FSM spec, and order the parts from Cruiserdan.

You should know the starter contacts can stick open (usually) or closed (sometimes.) If they stick closed you have a MAJOR problem on your hands as the starter will keep running and several 'mudders have had major repairs as a result. One guy almost burned down his house with the truck in the garage with the contacts stuck. Get this fixed now.

Great timing for this thread. I was cleaning up the old starter from the parts truck, then I realized that both of the contacts inside the case of the solenoid were toast. Simple fix. Thanks.
