Radio Slot

I am sure some smaller than DIN opening CB's will fit, but need some trim around them. As for a drop in fit, a stock radio(quite a few years to pick from), a blank off plate(hard to find, they have the "T" in middle) or the even more elusive optional dash pocket, of which I have only seen one in person.

Simple question: what radio fits in the radio slot w/o modification?

Answering my own question. An AM/FM from an 82 pickup fits nicely as you can see. I just need to find or fab a faceplate.

chatted with crutchfield online, they had nothing that fit a 6.5x2 opening, standard opening is 7x2, so not much cutting needed if you wanted to go that route, you could probably take 1/4 inch from each side. I may go this route as I am not much of a purist, as long as it comes out looking good.

Toyota did not have a standard opening for radios for a long time. I found that out years ago with my old Toyota Corolla.

Is there an AM/FM radio with an integral faceplate like the OEM AM radio?

I didn't get the faceplate so had to improvise and got one from the junkyard from a Corolla I believe. It fits great but the labels are reversed which is no big deal to me. I think I follow you but maybe I'm not on the same page as you with the "faceplate" What I'm referring to is required to cover a bit of metal still showing on the radio.

Compare the pic above with my install pic on my build thread and you'll see what I used.

found this neat part that would work nicely I think in conjunction with the 82 pickup stereo:
ANTOnline.com - Scosche DCAXU Scosche Auxiliary Input with 3.5 Cable

this way you could run your ipod directly to the car stereo amplifier, you would have to control the volume via the mp3 player but I think it would work as an amp should have rca input jacks, Chris - did the 82 pickup stereo have rca jacks, I would guess no probably, I like the way the piece fits up under the dash cleanly.

It looks like we're thinking along the same line. I don't like the looks of "modern" radios with blue, red, green glowing faces and needing to cut the radio slot larger to fit but I want to be able to play my iPod too. I decided the radio will be seperate from an iPod setup. Of course you're right the 82 radio doesn't have RCA input but here's what I think I'll try, seems like a good alternative that can be tucked away unseen but still provide a way to play an iPod: iPod-directly-to-amp install in classic car with pics! Can anyone tell me where to mount the original mono speaker for the original AM radio?

Yep, in the back behind one of the cargo panels. You'll see the supports for it there. It's a standard 5"x7" speaker and it needs the tabs at the end of the long dimension. I have a brand new spare (not OEM) if you need one. I bought a pair and used one for the ham radio speaker in my BJ60 (they have mounts for a single 5"x7" up under the dash).

I added mounts on the opposite side of my '55 as well so I could run a stereo with speakers in the factory locations.

I guess me going the 4x 6 1/2" speakers in the doors and up above in the celing means I'm not a purist, nor the Pioneer CD receiver with iPod controls built in will even resemble the factory FM radio I so recently removed :grinpimp: I won't be getting to that until after this summer when she's back together, but oh my it'll be sweet! Pics will come when I do my build thread.

Both my 78's have speaker (singular) wiring behind the PS panel in the rear.
