Do the later model4banger/v6 radiators have the same brackets as the 22r?
Is there any advantage to having one over the 87 stock 2 core?

They should mount the same but the fan shrouds will be different. Also, the v6 versions have an angled inlet pipe on the top and some have built in tranny coolers for the auto transmission. Anything newer than 95 Taco or 96 4Runner won't fit at all. Way too big.

I just put a rad from a 3.0 4runner in a 22re pick-up because it was the only one I had on hand. the only difference is that on one of the upper mount holes you will need to use a nut, the other three holes line up perfectly, and the fan shroud fits too.

Correction- you have to use the 22re fan shroud on the 3.0 rad in your 22re pick-up. Does that make sense?
Yea. So there's no real advantage?

My experience with 22r's includes some overheating episodes, but all of them resulted from an incident that prevented the cooling system from working properly: radiator clogged with mud, head gasket blew, water pump quit, etc. I have not ever had a properly functioning cooling system fail to cool the engine adequately on a 22r. I live in a climate that is quite warm for most of the year, and consistently overload my trucks. In theory I suppose that a larger radiator could dissipate more heat, but in my experience the 22r/22re trucks come with plenty of radiator. I just used the 3.0 radiators that I had lying around because they were in good shape, and they happened to fit.

previous owner had the radiator replaced... not sure if it was replaced with a 22re radiator or 3.0 but it definitely looks like it was for an automatic as it has that extra cooler attatched to it. so you do not have to get the 5spd one, auto radiator works fine... though, again, im not sure if its a 3.0 or 22re radiator in there. (how would i find out?)

Both times I bought aftermarket (Modine brand) radiators for a 22RE, they came with connections on the bottom for the auto tranny cooler, even though I specified I didn't need them. I believe they (and others) just make them all the same, one less part to stock, universal fit.

That extra cooler is probably for the power steering pump. I think all replacement radiators have the connections for the auto tranny.

interesting. yea thats definitely a possibility then... anyone ever find the radiator without the extra auto stuff?

I would bet that if you went to the dealership with your VIN and a BIG PILE of money, they would let you buy an OEM radiator that doesn't have the bottom tranny fittings. Toyota charges a fortune for their radiators. But, then again, mine is 21 years old now, still original.

Last couple of times I have bought radiators, I went to radiators.com. They will try to talk you into finding a shop to do the install for you, with a bunch of hype about "how hard it is to replace". Just insist on having them ship it. Last time I bought one, I ordered it at about lunchtime from my office, when I got home that evening it was on my front porch! Plus, they left me a bag of Hershey's Kisses as a "thank you gift"!

Why would it matter? If you don't have an auto just don't hook anything to the fittings, it wont make any difference in the performance or operation.

2 row vs. 3 row

A few years ago, I installed a 3 row radiators.com rad to replace my clogged 2 row OEM; the 3 row worked fine except on hot days it didn't pass enough coolant fast enough and the truck ran warmer than 'ideal'. Replaced it with an OEM( discount price about $300) and the OEM 2 row works fine under ALL conditions. I'm very happy.

I put a 22rte rad in mine(3 row)works great and direct bolt in......it was about 10.00 more then the 2 row
