In July I purchased a 1966 FJ40 hardtop (or more accurately described after reading here, a 1965 titled 1966). A picture is below. As I am contemplating all the restoration it needs, I've come across a number of questions. I'm starting with three:

Why does my hood not have any rubber bumpers/hooks for the windshield?

What is up with my air filter? I haven't seen this part available in catalogs and its not shown in my engine manual. What is it? and

Where should the radio have been installed? My photo shows the PO had it placed almost flush against the left side of the transfer case lever. That can't be where it was intended, but I don't see another appropriate space.

I'm starting with posting photos of the cruiser, with photos of the parts to follow.

Thanks for the input and advice.

Nice cruiser. the early ones didn't have bumpers on the hood to fold down the windshield

there was no radio in the early cruisers. PO added. The slot above it is for the ash tray.

the air filter isn't stock and neither is the carb. The engine looks to be a later F or 2f but I can't see much of it.

Enjoy!

wesintl is right that is a non-stock carb and air cleaner. Looks like a 2F to me. The valve cover on all F engines were made from stamped steel. If your oil filter is on the passenger's mounted to the block it's probably a 2F or a 1974 model F engine that had the valve cover changed to one off a 2F.

Bumpers and windshield hold downs were not stock on the hard top model until the 66 model came out. The Factory soft top models always had them.

Leaving town tonight after work but next week I can probably find some part numbers for a 63 that should be the same. That's the newest FJ40 parts microfiche I have.

My oil filter's been replaced with a twist on, but it is mounted passenger side on the engine block. Thanks for the input. I'll take some close-ups of the engine because I'd really like to know its model as I hunt for parts.

The spin on oil fiter started mid 69. But at first was on the driver's side plumbed with hose and mount to the intake manifold. In 74 it moved to the passenger;s side block. This was also an improvement in the oiling system with full flow filtering. Before that only part of the oil out of the oil pump got filtered. Then that oil was just dump back in to the oil pan.

Thanks for all the input. Upon closer inspection, my setup is indeed a 2F (looks like it was 1978 based on the serial number) with a Rochester 2 Jet carb and FoMoCo air filter. I'll be attempting to find the appropriate parts for tuneup purposes.

On to my next question. The last photo shows my PTO winch. Some of the diagrams show a lever on the front left side, a clutch of sorts. Am I missing the part or do I have a different style? Help is appreciated.

The winch you have is a Koenig King not Toyota. :) You'll have to search Rover and Jeep sites for info. It does look like its missing the lever to disengage the dog (some were located underneath though). That is only used to disconnect the drum from the shaft to freewheel and spool out cable.

Should be interesting to see what PTO gearbox you have. :hhmm:

I do have a lever under my seat behind the shifter. Since I was trying to match up what I had to Toyota specs, I thought that was the forward/neutral/reverse control and there was a separate external engage/disengage type part. My clutch hydraulics are out at the moment but when repaired I will test its operation. If it will start. That too seems "out" at the moment.:frown:
