So Im stationed in Japan, and on an impulse with not a lot of research, I bought a 92 HzJ73 based on a couple pictures from northern mainland Japan. It had a "great new paint job". Dupe #1. When the truck arrived, I started digging in to it and within the first month, had to replace the entire fuel tank and lines due to the top being completely rusted. The windshield frame is rotten and requires replacement. Also, pulled the car carpet and have rust in the rear corners all the way through the floor and the rear quarters and rear fender well lips are rotten as well. I still have a year left here and feel Im in a losing battle on this one.

Ultimately, the truck will be going back to Oklahoma, hopefully as my daily driver, seeing the highway a lot with some mild offroad on the weekends. Nothing crazy, just backwoods trail stuff.

Now, Im more in research mode and am trying to decide between an HzJ77 and an HDJ81. Im married with two small kids, hence the 4 doors. Appearance wise, I like them both. There are more 80's available in better shape, I like the coil suspension for the highway travel, and parts availability seems a little better. 77's are hard to find in good condition, and those are $$$, but the rarity of them is appealing, especially once I get back stateside. I feel the 1HD-T may be a little more highway friendly than the 1Hz. Last time I was in OK, I was driving 30 miles one way to get to base.

I realize this is a 70 crowd, just didn't know where else to put it. Guess theres not really a question, just trying to think through the next purchase looking for input from you experienced guys. Thanks!

My feeble input:
The 1HZ desperately needs a turbo if you chose a 77 Series.

Go with an HDJ81. A better family platform and you will have a little easier time getting parts (other than the engine and RHD-specific items).

I'll add that I would get the newest one possible that will meet the 25 year mark when you rotate home.

Remember the age is determined by production date NOT year model.

If you can skate to May 93 you will end up with R134 A/C. More better.

Thought of that. Question about importation. If the vehicle is build dated May '93, can it ship in May '18 or does it have to wait until June?

It has to wait till May 2018. You can give poa to someone you trust, push your deros by 30-60 days (unless your seperating) in that case file for an extension. If my acronyms doesn't make sense pm me your branch. You can't bring both back, but you can strip one down to a few bins of parts. OR if your married mil-mil and one of you is seperating and the other is staying in you can bring two cars back. Pm me questions, I'm somewhat an expert on this subject. Down to apple map pins for the places you need to go.

Also, I'd go with the 80. You have two kids and intend on daily driving the thing. You have to be crazy (like me) to get the 77. Regardless don't let it be your only car. Just note that the Japanese are starting to figure out that 70's are the new hot commodity and prices are inflating like they do on skylines and supras.

Yeah, that's what I was saying. My DEROS is May 2018, so if the build date is May 1993, it can ship IN May 2018, not the next month right?

Right. It can't leave the country prior to the build month and year... we'll technically it can't enter the US until it's 25 years old to the month, but the TMO office would book you out unless it's 25 years at time of export inspection. You'd have to give someone a special poa to deregister the truck and ship the vehicle. Legal can get you that.

Side note, ensure the engine matches the frame number. You can tell if the engine has been swapped if you have a title modification. I only mention this because I heard about a guy with an 80 who's truck was crushed in LA because his engine was replaced at some point and was newer then 25 and said truck was crushed.
