remember that the stock GM exhaust manifold...depending on the year and model...will have an large EGR port on teh drivers side
 
yes ...with the rams horn manifolds...the factory setup was to run the plug wires like post # 18 shows...I think there may be some varation in that but generally route from distributor...down behind the cylinder heads, and along the lower part of teh cylinder head to feed the spark plugs from underneath.

FullSail... ? have you put many miles on your truck...the basic issue is cooking the plug wire boots at the manifold...which I don't think would be unique to the Vortec 5.7.

I hope to incorporate the correct plug wire heat shields for the rams horn style manifold ( see the link to the web site above)... or would love to just run stock GM manifolds. I've cooked 3 or 5 plug wire boots so far.

Ram's horn manifolds do sound nice under load ...say 3K RPM or more..
 
My truck has the stock Suburban 5.7 Vortec manifolds and an H55F. I use 90* boots on my spark plugs and stock heat shields. I have 7000 miles on my swap, and the only thing I've cooked is my fingers when trying to pull the tight MSD plug wire boots off the plugs.

interested how you have clearance on the passenger side...got any pics of the engine showing manifolds / exhaust setup?

I installed the new set of straight boot wires with the nomex heat sleeves and that seems to work well. Next problem... Now, I have a stutter/ misfire at freeway speeds. Good smooth power from a standstill but when I hit about 50 mph, it starts to cut-out and buck a little bit, almost like I'm hitting the rev limiter in a race-car. Not sure where to start on this one. Fuel? Computer? Distributor? Any thoughts? It did this a little bit when I first got it running but it went away. Now, after 1500 miles or so, it's doing it again.
 
normal first steps.... (1) swap out fuel filter (2) Check fuel pressure (3) check for obvious issues with spark plugs/wires (4) Check for any trouble codes (5) consider new dist cap & rotor button.

what side of the transmission is your slave cylinder? And you have no issues with your stock exhaust manifolds or have no clearance issues?
 
Those look like advance adapters motor mounts. I also run the stock exhaust and it clears fine.
 
I've now replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, cleaned the fuel filter. I took it our for a run and it went like a champ until I hit overdrive and then it stumbled like crazy. If I put my foot in it and downshifted, it would pull great until I let it kick into OD again and then it would start to stutter and stumble. I've found some posts on a Chevy site that indicate a worn distributor gear can cause this so I'm going to change that out. Do you think this could be a fuel pump/ flow issue?

My slave cylinder is on the passenger side. You can see the hose for it in the passenger side exhaust manifold pic above. Below is a picture of a plate that Ron had to make for it. Apparently, the bellhousing for the earlier trucks are not the same as the '87s. Also, I don't have any problems with my exhaust the way it is. The only thing I would change is running the crossover above the driveshaft instead of under the transfer case. That is only so I can get my skid plate back on.

Kurtis is right, my motor mounts are from advanced adapters. To get the engine in the position required for the stock exhaust manifolds to clear the frame and accommodate the A.I.R. pump, the motor mounts and transmission crossmember had to be slotted in a milling machine. Here are some pictures.

After the engine was in position, Ron welded a plate in for strength and to take away the potential for movement.

Simon, sorry about your engine issue. I don't have the foggiest idea where to start with that one since it's only doing it when the torque converter is cycling. Sounds weird...
 
sure sounds like a fuel issue to me......

what happens when you keep it in D and cruise at 60mph or so for a while?

did you clean out the fuel filter or did you replace it. if you replaced it, cut the old one open and have a look-see.

has the tank in the 60 been replaced? any rust in it?

It will buck and stumble some if I keep it at a steady 60. Newer tank, clean inside. Washable filter, I cleaned the screen today. I'm thinking that the fuel pump is not giving steady flow so I'm going to try replacing it tomorrow.
 
I use a walbro external fuel pump mounted on the passenger side frame rail. I also use a GM OEM fuel filter from a 1999 era SUV/ Pickup. (I think the GM fuel filters on the pickups and SUV's have been very similar) for the past few years. Good product...I generally just through the old one away. Who makes a washable fuel filter for a fuel injected engine...not sure how well that would work? May be fine..I've just never seen one. Make sure to check fuel pressure as that's one of the primary tools for diagnosis. Its a given that your engine will not run right if proper fuel pressure is not maintained.
 
another note is where Simon relates this issue is only happening in OD (over drive)... I'll try and remember to ask my buddies at the GM shop tomorrow what they think...I may drop by there tomorrow to aggrivate them a little (in a good way). Holiday from work for me tomorrow.
