well while i was hauling wood, from silver springs md. about 56 mi from my house, after the first load i noticed after getting in to town there when i stopped at a red light my idle was fluctuating from about 750 rpm to 1500 rpms so has this happened to any of you and what was it, i have a 87 efi system on an 86 22re in an 84 4runner,
and also to day when the snow was falling i went to get beer and smokes, when i stopped at a stop sign the idle went to 2000 rpm and stayed there till i hit the gas and then it came down. oh and no check engine light or codes.

--generic answer--

check vacuum lines and your IACV

Having your idle speed set too high will cause the idle speed to fluctuate when the brake pedal is depressed. I can't recall right now the idle speed for a 22R/RE engine. It sounds like your throttle cable is sticking or the t-body needs some cleaning. Try lubing/cleaning and set the idle speed to spec and hopefully that fixes it.:)

ok found out about the iac valve , and i do not think it is the throttle cable, i thought that about the 2000 rpm today but the surge only last a few minutes then it idles down to the 750 rpm where i had it set.

thanks i will let you all know what i find.

Sticking throttle body butterfly. Mine does it about every 6 months. You can bet I'm gonna tear that thing totally apart now that it's out. Something is sticking on the shaft, but I can't see it.

ok guys i am in the fsm, and for removal of air valve it says remove the 2 bolts and gasket , then it says to use a new gasket when reassembling. now i have taken these off before i do not remember a gasket.

so is there supposed to be a gasket between the air valve and the intake.
