Weird problem with my '87 runner and I don't know where to start to look (or if I should even worry). Whenever I shift into second gear there is a rattle that is quite loud when I give it gas. When I let off the gas it stops. She is a stock truck (2.4 EFI 5 speed) and I don't hear any rattle in any other gear except 2nd. Does anyone have any idea why that would be. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rudy

Kind of strange... is the exhaust clamp still attached to the trans bell housing?

I will have to check tomorrow (since I haven't had much time). I don't feel like lying in a wet driveway tonight. I need a bigger garage. Just looking for advice as to where to look first.

Thanks

Yeah exhaust is often a culprit of rattles and noises. Why in 2nd gear only I do not know. Hard to determine these things without hearing it yourself hehe

Check all your exhaust first and get back to us.

Exhaust all looks good and I can't find anything else loose. I know it is hard to diagnose problems without hands on obsevance at times. Just looking for ideas. I talked to a friend earlier about the problem and he said their race cars would break something shifting into second gear cause of the stress at times? I did a few off road runs this year with her and shifted into second on some tough climbs. I haven't looked into the tranny yet. That will have to come at a later date (I still have my 40 to put back together). Maybe it is possible to break the second gear on a manual trans?

Thanks

Rudy

Maybe try shifting the t-case into neutral and the trans into 2nd and have a listen under there.... FYI 2nd gear is not a common problem in these trans.

Jerod,

Still the same rattle. It is only when am moving. Maybe a freak of nature?

Thanks though,

Rudy
