my neighbor has an 84 4x4 22r (carburetor) truck. he went metal detecting today and when he started his truck he said it started then shut off and would not crank over. he said a relay behind the headlight relay was clicking and that he read on the interweb that some one else just unpluged it, and his truck started and ran. his question is what is this relay and will it hurt the truck running it unpluged? oh and for those that have to know he bought this truck brand new for $5995.00.

it would not even crank over. and i was not there so i am feeding you guys second hand info. he told me he read on the interweb that some one had the same problem and unplugged the relay and that truck started and ran after unhooking the relay.

Read that thread, the way Toyota setup the relay is quite silly. The same wire that fires the relay also sends power through the relay.

It could also be a bad starter, but its not a bad idea to mod the relay as it only takes a few minutes. I helped a buddy do this mod on a 4runner that was acting up and it seemed to work. We looked at the diagrams they psoted, and their plug number info didn't seem correct when we tested the relay on the truck. We took our time and figured out what wire did what before we cut anything. Total time was about 1 IPA.
