i think my problem is the egr on my 87 22re, but i dont know for sure... i dont know what the egr does, whether or not its needed or what happens when one goes bad, and id rather not go out and but a new one if it aint it, so im mainly just lookin for suggestions or any kind of guidelines as to where to look... for those wondering, my truck has eratic idle and doesnt keep a constant rpm when at speed when accelerating its fine, but as soon as i reach speed it stumbles and is just eratic, it backfires also, now ive adjusted the timing, but i dont know if its a tooth off or if thats even possible on a 4cylinder, so any kind of place for me to start lookin would be great

  1. Bad engine ground?
  2. Something in the ignition system?
Those are where I'd start from what you've described. More symptoms and info is needed.

at all ive looked at, everything is grounded out fine.... ummm..... basically when idling whether it be at a light or just started, it have eratic idle, kinda like theres a bigger cam in it but instead of a slow lope its very rapid, and while accelerating its fine, but as soon as i reach any kind of speed, whether it be 5 or 45 mph, it will not run right, itll jump and buck and bounce and everything else in between, and for some reason or other my truck likes to go thru more gas than it used to, when i got the truck i dont know the mileage i got due to a missing speedo cable, but i know it didnt go thru as much as it is right now... maybe my motor is gettin too much fuel? its somthin my bro mentioned czu one of his old cars did the same thing at idle.... i dont know, im still figuring out the whole world of efi and 4bangers... so im lost...

Where is your timing currently?

Have you cleaned out the throttle body? Often times it is very dirty and the idle passage is clogged. But no one cleans it and just adusts the idle screw then causing the ECU to actually get confusing messages and consequently the idle becomes eratic.

Could be many things really.

i dont have a timing light or money to buy one so i cant say exactly where my timing is at... and as for cleaning the throttle body i dont know the first thing i should do when it comes to that except for taking it off

If you dont have a timing light, how can you time your truck? Not trying to be a smart ass but...

If you remove the intake hose that connects the throttle body to the filter housing, you can then clean the intake/butterfly with carg cleaner/toothbrush. If it has not been cleaned then it really needs it.

Go buy/borrow a timing light and time the engine properly. You have to be timed right before anything else can occur.

hahahaha dude you need a timin lite

ok i'm gonna be vague cause i dont feel like typin it all out cause you should call that hotline

egr= exhaust gas recirculation
spent fuel is injected to the cyliner to reduce Nox and cool the cumbustion chamber. only supposed to kick on at high rpm and at load

you need to check your engine grounds. i say it every time. look in the faq

ecu temp sensors will become inoperative and can cause some of what your describing

you need to set the idle speed. check the faq

where in the faq??? and i dont need a timing light... ive only used one after i rebuilt my first motor when i was 15 and didnt know anything, but with my second car i never used one and it runs tip top, and i never used one on my ford... i learned how to time it without a light... i know my toyota is almost to where it needs to be and for the cleaning, the throttle body i shall do that the next day i can

i know im gettin help and im thankful for it, im just sayin that i dont really need a timing light to get it close to where it needs to be, im not lookin for perfect im just lookin for help to my problem so i can actually drive my truck again... if you dont wanna help point me in a direction to start lookin besides the faq's than your just mean and appearently dont know much about fixing things... if im wrong than prove me wrong and give some advice as to where to look czu i know the timing aint far off as to were its supposed to be, and if you dont wanna help than dont help...

Dude. This forum is awesome in that unlike pirate and many other forums for this type of recreational modification of off road vehicles, people are nice, and helpful, and all around pleasant.

And your screwing that up.

Wristy has helped more people than you can imagine, and if you look hard enough, hes trying to help you. Your coming off with some attitude for someone looking for help. And I might add, comments like "I don't need a timing light", and "I can get it close enough" are not helping any of us to think that your going to do anything but whine like a baby and stamp your feet. If you've figured out some magical way to set timing without a light, by all means let us know. Speaking for myself I sure am interested.

I know you said you checked all your grounds, how many did you find? which ones were they? what happened when you jumped the on board diagnostic terminals? Why do you think its the egr if this happened after you hooked up your fourth cylinder? and how in the hell does a fuel injector wire disapear?

Maybe you should start over and try again.

I feel like mitigating this morning for some reason..

First off, there is no need for anyone to get defensive. Not that big of a deal really.

Second off, I know many many people that time their truck/cars/bikes by ear/test drive. I used to do it too but not now. It is just NOT the right way to do it. I think that is the general idea with our group and certainly the general idea for a true mechanic.

Thirdly, it is very difficult to help someone when they are using uncertain methods to fix their vehicle i.e. not using a timing light. What else have you guessed at? That is the general concern of the group and leaves troubleshooting, especially over the net, at a disadvantage.

There are always several ways to skin a cat and your ear/feel might be exceptional in terms of hearing timing. But honestly, none of us know you and most will doubt that ability. So, you can either follow what the group suggests or not. Obviously, it is your choice and either way, your life and our lives are unchanged-minus the fact your truck still will not work.

So, what is the shame/issue with just following our suggestions?

no shame... im just unemployed due to no one in m town is hiring, so i cant really buy anything, im not lookin for perfect im not lookin at doin things right, im just lookin at gettin help to narrow down my choices as to what my problem might be, and im just gonna apalogize right now for my bad attitude, ive just been stressin out over my entire screwed up life and i tend to take out in places i shouldnt be... as for the egr its just a guess czu the book i have mentions the egr in the areas for troubleshooting, thats why im doin my best to be specific as i can, as for the missing wire, i dont know how that happened, i bought it off some guy htat had it sittin in a corn field for abit.... it needed a new motor i had one, did the swap and everything was jim dandy.... and as for checking the faq's i dont know where to look, i came to this sight in thought of lookin for just general help, not perfection, i dont go off-roading due to the fact that i cant find any place to do so, thats why im not lookin for perfect, im just lookin to get it fixed, ok ppl... so if no one wants to help me out just say so and leave this sight

Look man, in the last year I have changed jobs, gone through a divorce and gone from seeing my kids every day to 1/10th of the time. Yeah, times are tough and I am a bit less sensitive to people complaining and making excuses.

So, like I said before, it is your choice what you do. If you want to delete your account, do it. If you do not, then it is most likely we can help you.

Let me suggest a position that might suit you better: let us know times are hard and maybe, just maybe, there is someone close to you that might loan you a timing light or whatever else you might need.

You gain very little from overreacting and quitting.

This will be the last time I try and reach out without just saying it is a waste of time.

Take our suggestions and try a little grace man. It goes a long way.

You might want to try and get a manual:
Free factory service manual downloads - alt.autos.toyota.trucks | Google Groups

Just looking at the "troubleshooting" section of my manual, it lists all sorts of possibilies for misfiring, and even more for backfiring. Unfortunately you might just have to test all the suspect components listed as possibilities in the manual.

Poor idling - Misfire:
- Ignition circuit
- Engine coolant temp circuit
- Volume air flow meter circuit
- Injectors
- Cold start system
- Compression
- ECM
- Fuel quality
- Spark plug
- Distributor
- EGR system

i am takin the suggestions, and i am thankful for the help, as for havin a friend that has a timing light, thats a no.... i only have 4 friends, and none of them work on cars... and the butterfly valve is clean now and still nothing... so how bout this, why dont i just start over with tryin to explain my situation....

poor idle, it lopes like it has a cam, but faster with the rpm change.... it accelerates smoothly, as soon as im at speed it stumbles, when i let off the gas it backfires worse than normal... thats the best i can explain it
