New to the 1st generation world.

Currently looking at 2 different 86 Ext cabs, both 22RE, both very clean in good condition. One is an Auto, very clean 162K miles. The other was an Auto, but the owner has swapped Tranny and Transfer case to make it a manual, engine rebuilt 12k miles ago.

I want a manual, just dont know if there is some known problems with that swap. I dont think he swapped a manual cluster either. So any experiences with auto to manual swaps? Any suggestions, etc, etc...

Thanks,
Jeff

I, personally, would not buy one that has had the swap. But for resale reasons not any other. Unless you plan on keeping this until you die-which is 99.9% unrealistic for most, you might want to consider just looking further for a stock 5 sp.

There is a really nice one in the Mud Classifieds. I think he is in CA though.

I would be worried about how well of a job they did with the swap. I would look for one that was a manual from the factory, lots of trucks out there to be had.

ive done this swap and it is easy and rock solid i wouldnt worry about it.....but that resale issue is true most people(none gear nut types) would be scared away by that..

I would think that anyone needs to think about resale with any kind of large purchase ( :

He more than likely will not have this truck all of his life so why not just take some additional time and find a stock 5sp?

Just my .02.

I'd search until you find the right 5spd. I've had autos and definitely prefer the manuals. Huge difference. I would probably pass on one that has had the swap done. Just my 2 cents. There are so many trucks out there. Be patient and you'll find the right one.
