I’m all for the suggestion above of EV and upgrade the 100 to a 200. Wait on the Tesla model Y

I stayed in D.C(Penn quarter)for 6wks and would never consider a 200 if i were living in around the area. Commuting 100mi. per day would be a huge no go unless your company is paying the gas bill. Even then I would feel guilty and buy something more fuel efficient. Your gas mileage will be closer to 12mpg with all the stop and go getting in/out of D.C. Time is to valuable to spend it at the gas station 2x a week. And don’t put beefy A/T tires on it either. Good luck and let us know what you decide. Very curious

Lots of charging stations for EVs in D.C making them a great option

I would get a yukon XL denali if it were me. they get 20mpg highway, can go over 420 miles on a tank of gas. Plenty of room to spare. You cannot beat a subruban / yukon xl in the functionality department. Still have 4WD, so much space. decent power, etc

You wouldn’t want an XL if you’re in D.C. That would be a parking nightmare.

Hey folks, I have been on and off here intermittently the last few years and have come to really appreciate all the info and the sense of community on these forums. My wife currently has a 100 series and although I have a rav4 I am in the market for something larger as we are expecting our fourth child. I am aware of the inherent limitations such as mpg and size as compared to something like a sequoia/expedition but keep coming back to the cruiser due to baked-in quality of cruisers; it just seems as if most other vehicles prioritize modern conveniences at the expense of quality and durability. Having said that, the hitch in my plan to get a 200 and sail off into the sunset is that I have a ridiculous commute (100 miles round trip) in northern va to DC daily and the lack of full speed adaptive cruise and low mpgs are holding me back. I have found full speed adaptive cruise to be a god send in the drudgery of commuting. Anyway, I would appreciate any advice from the sages on the forum as to what to pursue, should I just go forward with the LC or what alternatives should I consider?

4 kids and 100 mile daily roundtrip commute? Toyota Sienna

I really appreciate all the comments from you guys, lots of great insight. The rav4 I have is a 2019 hybrid which gets 40mpg and has all the adaptive cruise Mumbo jumbo but I can’t fit all the kids. I am always interested in the used land cruiser market and checked out a 2006 100 series on a whim today. It was absolutely flawless. Bought new and traded in from the only owner to the same dealer who serviced it its whole life. On top of that it was totally rust free. I decided to keep the rav4 for my more strenuous commuting days and bought the 100 for those days when I know I will have all the kids or when I want a change. Plan is to keep it until the final year of the 200 series (and possibly the LC in North America all together) and upgrade at that point.

There's more to operation costs than just fuel. The other consumables and typical maintenance items are pricey in limited production vehicles like the LC, LX, Range Rover....

A few years ago we had a CRV and when the airbag recall was hot and heavy we got a loaner while waiting for parts. A minivan. After driving it for a month we had to buy one. Sliding doors, cargo room, great gas mileage, handling, etc... They are purpose built machines, like a LC. Your purpose is kid hauling and commuting.

We drove them all and ended up with the Odyssey. The V6 is powerful, with active noise cancelling it is quiet in the cabin, etc... It gets like 28 mpg on the freeway. There are millions of them so parts are reasonable....

EDIT: Rent whatever you are thinking about buying for 7 days. Put the kid seats in and really try it out. Sliding van doors and kids in beltway parking lots are mindblowing. With 4, just think of where their friends will be sitting.

If a minivan just doesn't work, try a suburban or even a full sized van, like a sprinter diesel.

If you are putting 100k on a car every 4 years then your issue is depreciation. If want a 200 then get one! Sure you will have to pay more for gas and that should be considered. But if you grab a 14 with under 75k for 40k and then sell it in 4 years with 175K for 22K ... then you drove a 200 as a commuter for $375 a month. That's not too shabby. (taxes, interest, issues with wife or long legged teens not included.) Good luck! The biggest issue you will have is figuring out what the largest tire you can upgrade to on stock suspension without rubbing.

If you are a small business owner, you can fully depreciate the cost of a new LC in year 1 and factor the tax savings into the purchase price. EG. If you get a 2020 for $80k and are paying 30% state and federal taxes, it really cost net $56k. You have to hold it for 5 years to avoid depreciation recapture. A 5 year old LC can sell in the 50k range. So, effectively, you are only paying operation costs to drive it for 5 years.

That's the same kind of math I shared with my wife to convince her the 200 was essentially free!

@Joshuak172

I know this is a 200 forum but same applies

My wife has an LX470 and I drive a 100 TLC. We have 4 kids all in car seats. We refuse to drive a minivan

In both vehicles we removed the fold and tumble seat from the 2nd row giving perfect “van like” access to the 3rd row. We put the oldest in the middle of the 2nd row because we trust him to safely shut the door and pass back snacks without spilling, etc. We also throw larger items (yeti cooler) that can’t fit behind the 3rd row in the 2nd row missing seat spot.

Works great for us YMMV.

The 100 is a nice rig. No doubt. I have one myself.

But when I haul 6 of us around, I like my 5.7 V8 200 LC.

While it’s all about balancing safety and reliability and finances etc, at the end of the day if I could afford it, I would never spend that many miles on the freeway in a small car. That many miles just increases the likelihood of a serious accident and my life and health are too valuable to my wife and children. The gas bill will definitely be expensive, but I consider it somewhat of an insurance policy. Yes, I have a good life insurance policy, but my children would rather have me alive and not only alive but fully functional in all aspects. So to me it’s worth spending the extra money if I think I can increase the likelihood of preserving or protecting my health

I would either be driving a Land Cruiser or an LX 570 just for these reasons.

Dang, I was looking at this car. It sure looks nice man. I hope it isn't a 93

I ran 87 in both my ujz-100's with 0 problems... 4.7 is a great motor.
