Pulsing/droning vibration at highway speeds (4 Viewers)

I'm chasing the same droning / vibration problem and it's really frustrating me now. My symptoms are almost identical to marcfj60. I noticed this recently after a long 5+ hour drive on a snowboarding trip at higher diving speeds. After returning from the trip I rotated my tires and got a front end alignment; checked diff fluids, etc.; problem did not go away so I replaced the front wheel bearings, re-checked tire pressures all around, etc... Vibration / droning still happening especially @ 70mph+ speeds... Letting off the accelerator at high speeds almost makes me feel like it is a driveline issue of some sort now... I'm hoping to have time to look this more tonight... My 100 has never driven this bad and I need her back healthy asap...

If anyone has resolved similar issues please post up some suggestions... I'm have a trip to Uwharrie planned at the end of the month and I am not driving another 5 hours with it riding this way...

I think if you can let off the accelerator and feel/hear the noise more, it's likely the ujoints on one or both driveshafts. I have something similar and am planning the ujoints replacement shortly...I'm pretty sure I have 218K on the originals, so I think I'm ready for new,

Definitely not a coil pack. I've done 3 of those already and completely different symptoms. Bad coil pack makes engine feel and run rough even at slow speeds.

Bluecruiser - I just broke 195k and I'm still on original U-Joints as well.

I've had a couple people suggest uneven tire wear but I just feel like its something else. I made arrangements to swap tires with another 100 Series tomorrow morning to determine if it is my tires. I will report back tomorrow with my results.

It was rear drive shaft u-joints! Replaced with new premium spicer u-joints! What a difference; feels all brand new again!

Also, I had a minor clunk or shift engagement I could feel putting the truck in reverse that also went away with the new u-joints and it just feels all around smooth now...

Those were my exact symptoms. New U-Joints did the trick. My ride is butter smooth now.

Yeah I guess mine really isn't a noise either. It is a slight roughness drone just like u said. If I let off the gas it goes away but it gets worse as a little load is applied such as when going uphill. The uphill has to be mild enough that it doesn't downshift but just enough to have to increase throttle input. The severity also seems to change depending on outside temperature

I think if you don't fix this problem your 100series will quit running in another 500k miles :)

My 2000 LC got this issue after I replaced the the tranny with a factory reman. Vibe at 69 mph... I have tried a few things like balance the drive shafts, swapped the drive shafts with another 2k. I have taken it to other shops and no one can find anything wrong! Recently got the vibration at full stop in gear (drive and reverse)- this may be another issue- not sure?but now it stops at 45 mph and starts again at 69 mph. Definitely when under load of going up hill get more pronounced. I was recently told "drive til it breaks". That will suck:).
I will try the u-joints soon. Can't hurt?
Anyone else out there with success fixing this issue.

I tried just about everything. As I am a service manager at a toyota dealer I even test drove other 2000 cruisers when they come in for service. Some were the same as mine and some were better as far as this drone goes. Mine seems to be dependent on weather. The colder the more noticeable. One of my technicians said it is a resonance through the intake manifold but I can't figure out why some do it more than others. I guess I will just keep driving it. I don't think it is anything serious. I would like it solved though like the rest of you

Brand new Spicer U-Joints installed / added to my rear drive shaft completely fixed my problem. The old ones had 195K miles on them and were in bad condition. I could also previously "feel" putting the truck in reverse or drive and now everything is butter smooth and quiet. It drives like brand new again that's about the best I can describe it.

I have this same issue with my 1999 w 200k. I'm glad to hear others have fixed it with U joints.

I believe mine is u joints as well since when I let off the gas and then reapply it, the issue will some times go away. It is definitely more pronounced when towing.

I have new oem u joints from CDan, but I have not yet fount the time to pop them in.

Pete

I put a whole new driveshaft in with no change. Also pulled the front after installation, still vibrating/droning.

i have the same issue. Vibration/droning...it changes when i let off the gas...definitely feels like a ujoint...i've had them go bad before on my toyota pickup. one of these days i'll climb under there and replace them. Until then, it will vibrate.

....Could adding a damper possibly help with this drone/resonance that we're all describing?
Have a look at the attached TSB.
Personally I have no experience w UZJ100s.

I will add one more completely impressed comment to this thread with the driving difference in my truck after replacing / adding new u-joints to my rear drive shaft... I had a nice 2+ hour interstate drive Fri at 70+MPH interstate driving speeds and flooring it, fast driving, etc is flat out excellent now...

Update - I never got around to replacing the U-joints but I did put the vibration damper back on the frame under the passenger front seat. I have not noticed the vibrations/resonating since then and I have traveled at highway speeds with and without a trailer in tow. I just did a long weekend with a 2,000 lb pop-up between Albuquerque and Carlsbad caverns and did not notice the vibration.

My 100 series has the same issue - got a little better when I replaced the front tires - I have balanced the front driveshaft made the noise/vibration a little better - rear shaft had been balanced by PO - any thoughts where in southern california I could take this to get a second opinion - tempted to do u joints to see if that is the issue - I get the vibration 60-70 and when I let off the gas the vibration goes 100% away but it I just touch the accelerator the vibration returns - anyone want to meet up to test drive mine and give me a second opinion - was also thinking of going out to yotamasters in corona
