Unless you plan on changing the fairhead would use steel.
Can i use synthetic rope?
Never seen synthetic used use with rollers. Fairhead is changed for synthetic. Never dealt with synthetic, stall have a longer life than synthetic in the desert. Have a 61 FJ40 with an original PTO with its original steel cable as far as I know.

The synesthetic stuff is awesome for safety - when it breaks it just falls on the ground. They have donuts rings that act as pulleys and knot clevices that are very handy.
