As many of u no i just did a 5 speed swap on my 86 4runner automatic truck. Well needless to say had issues geting right clutch and stuff finaly gotem. Its installed runs and drive. Problem is i bought a piece of shyt w56 trans that sounds like im makeing a rocky margarita. Dude who sold me it for 375 said he has a forward shift he would sell me for a 100 bucks. to make up for the bad transmission. So whats the pros and cons of the top shift vs forward shift? I already cut a hole in my floor makeing it alittle bigger wont hurt nothing. So not worried about that. IS either trans stronger weaker. easyer to modify realy wich is better. should i try to find another top shift or buy the forward control. DO they both use the same clutch flywheel pressure plate and slave cyl?" It should just bolt right up corect except for makeing the hole in floor difrent? Please no flaming for me makeing a new thread. old one died . Other then the bearings being bad inside the topshift i installed. it shifts great drove great.1st threw 3rd makes noise. 4rth is silent no noise and 5th grinds. the noise is pretty dam loud. And i realy dont think i have the skillset to pull apart the topshift and replace the bearings

First, I'm not clear why your replacing the transfer, if the trans is bad. If you have noises in every gear except 4th, it's probably a bearing on one of the idler shafts in the tranny, as 4th is "straight thru", no other gears engaged.

$100 is not a bargain on a transfer, I've seen people GIVE them away. He owes you another tranny.

The only difference between the forward and top shift is the location of the shift rails. Beyond the rails, they are exactly the same inside. The one advantage to a top shift is it can be used for the rear case if you want to go to dual cases.

Or you could get your money back and get another tranny instead of dealing with problems.

hes willing to sell me a w56 forward control trans and transmission for 100 bucks being the w56 topshift i bought from him has bad bearings. and yeah i no about 4rth being a straight threw set versus the others . and that being why 4rth dont make noise. I was asking bout the transfercase because im pretty shore he gonna let me keep the bad trans to. if one transfer case is better then the other. ide be willing to swap it over if its a east swap like a heep is. the transfercase on the bad trans i just put in shifts like a dream high low works. When i bought the trans wasnt like the guy gave me a warnty or anything i bought used trans and got bad one. these things happen when w e buy used old stuff.

I also still have my old auto trans and transfercase. .U say the rear portion of the top shift is whats used for dual cases hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Well you need a top shift case, complete to use as the rear case. The low range box is the front portion of the case and forward shift crawl box could be used in front of a top shift case with an adapter.

My opinion, FWIW...

I know if *I* sold someone a tranny for $375 and it was junk, you'd better believe I'd give him his money back. That's a top dollar price, and I would only sell at that price if I knew for sure it was OK. I sold the original W56 out of my truck 2 years ago for $100 (the one in the photo above), and it was working fine when I pulled it out to swap in the R151F.

Several years ago I sold a 22RE to a friend, and helped him install it. It smoked. So I gave him his money back and helped him pull it back out.

I GAVE AWAY a perfectly usable W56 (tranny & transfer) this summer to a friend when I couldn't sell it.

i only payed the 375 because i needed everythign my truck was a automatic. . i got everything i needed except a bad trans. if anyone has one they wana sell cheap let me no. i still got my k1500 99 suburban to play in the snow and or pick up a trans in. and yeah KLF i feal riped off. not much i can do about it at this point tho. except throw it threw his windshield. but im not 17 no more. and i got custody of my son now. So i gota just take this in stride. and keep telling my self jail aint worth it.

OK, understood. We've all learned lessons in this activity. Way back in '95 I had an '85 4Runner and the rear diff was howling. I paid $350 for one out of a junkyard (had to pull it myself, in the snow). It solved my problem, but now I know I paid way too much, heck I've given perfectly good ones of those away too. I have another open diff downstairs I need to get rid of.

Wish I had kept that tranny now, I'd meet you half way, let you buy me lunch in NJ for the trade. :D

im just stuck . and realy dont think the guy ment to screw me. i do think he should trade me a good one even up. i just cant find any others for sale anywhere close to the 100 hes asking for the forward control one. He realy didnt seem like the kind of guy to burn u seemed like the kind of guy who dresses up like santa. till he told me 100 bucks lol. Then i wanted to kickem in the walnuts. He sells alot of yota parts. What would u alll do would u take the chance on the 100 buck one. or keep the truck parked till u found one cheap.

i never seperated one of these from a tcase befor. is it as straight forward as doing a jeeps? where u located

and ur a hell of a nice guy by the way. All of u are. Merry xmass everyone

it is not hard, i forget how many bolts but you pull those and it slides right apart, you might want to order the output shaft seal for the trans or is it the input on the transfer, i can not remember. i am Charles Town WV. about an hour from Baltimore.

I can't remember either but it is as easy as unbolting the trans from the motor. 8 or 10 bolts a couple whacks with a mallet and they should come right apart. I helped a buddy pull his with the trans still in the truck.
