I want to replace or paint the tranny shifter cover plate. Does anyone know the correct sequence of things to pop out? I am new to 200 series and still learning - could not find the FSM online anywhere to illustrate. Would prefer knowing right way before I start yanking and breaking expensive plastic parts :)

To add on to Tony's response, but just hit in painting a bit more.

The gear indicators (P,N,D, etc) are simply unpainted areas of the one piece shifter plate. Not like on every other Toyota 4x4 that has the shift plate and the gear indicators as seperate pieces. You can paint, but you will need a very percise masked P,N,D,etc templates to cover those indicators are paint is applied to the shift plate itself. It is possible, im working on a temple to make it easier, but just wanted to offer that idea as you go further with that project.

Buying new is about $200, and may be the better solution. I know I wish I could just go buy it new.

Here's the instructions. The other sections keep referencing back to this section for the CoolBox removal. So I guess just start pulling parts until it tells you to get to where you want to be before pulling the actual coolbox because that would be a huge dickpain (draining refrigerant and whatnot).

Thanks so much, will give this a go!

Old thread... any updates? Wife wants either a cover on the shift plate (dash kit or something similar) or a new shift plate (hers is pretty scratched up from previous owner). Would rather not disassemble the entire center console to replace this part.

Reaching out on this one as well. I looked at the pdf above and saw the “14 clips”. Seems pretty scary. I don’t want to break anything. I just want to clean the black pieces of plastic that slide when you shift. It’s sticky. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a tool for the “claws” that are supposed to be removed?

thanks!!

Bump. My shift plate is also pretty scratched by previous owner (the truck was otherwise pristine, WTF people are doing around the shifter? Throw house keys?).

Between $200 for the new shift plate part and process that looks involved and scary I am wondering if I want to tackle it. Anyone who did it, can chime in how involved it really is? The instructions call for seats removal, which I doubt is necessary.

This applies to the earlier years - unknown if it applies to more recent model years -

Taco2Cruiser has previously experimented with paints and found that SEM 39253 Medium Titanium Metallic is a great match for the door handles, and it also very closely matches the metallic grey-ish trim around the shifter. I painted my shifter surround with this paint and it worked great. I also painted the plastic woodgrain on the shifter handle that was all worn off. The paint does show some mild wear after 1.5 years, but it is negligible.
