I'll try and make this long story short. I have currently been working on a little project (67 FJ40) that involved a 4.236 Perkins diesel that I inherited when my parents go divorced 20 + years ago. Now that said the engine has been sitting for 20 + years until I found a project for it to go into.

Anyhow got it started last summer, and installed into the current project frame. It run, but smoked. Winter hit and hadn't messed with much until this spring. So I ordered new injectors, no help. So I ordered a rebuilt injection pump, still no help. Still not running quite right, firing on all 4 cyclinders, but still smoked terrible. Now noticing blow back through the dipstick tube. Okay, well maybe stuck rings, so I dump a jug of Marvel mystery oil down the injector holes a let it set a week +.

Today I decided that I would crank it over and blow all the MM oil out of the cyclinders and see what happened. Well first thing was 1, 3, 4 cyclinders blew out nicely. 2 puffed, hmmm???? Pulled the valve cover to check the valve train, looked fine.

So stupid me decided to go ahead and pull the head. I should have left sleeping dogs lie.

The following is a picture story of my current, unrepairable story.

The first thing I encounter is the top of this piston staring at me out of the block.

Now mind you this is before I pulled the piston, thinking okay busted some rings, but there sure is a lot of slop in the piston inside the cyclinder.

So I again foolishly decide to drop the pan and pop the piston out. Stupid me again.

This is the next thing I encounter

And no folks that is not piston parts!!!!! This is a sleeved engine, and well that is the sleeve out of #2 cyclinder. The sleeve hole is beat to ever living Sh*t, and at this point it is my understanding that this can't be fixed.

So I guess it is time to step back and regroup, and try and figure out what to do. I have already spent over $1500 on the injectors, inj. pump, adaptors for the engine to transmission, and the starter.

And when I say "I" did these things "I" did, Alan supervised and assisted.

So with all this said I will eat supper, and then go and try and wash the nasty diesel oil out of my hair.

I hope all your projects go better. I was hoping to have this done by Flat Nasty, but I think that hope has been dashed.

Thanks for listening.

Ouch - any chance of finding another motor?

That is one option, really only need a long block, or least just the block. The head has some slight damage, and could be cleaned up.

Another option is a drop in "ready to go" engine

or have done just a little research and can bore it sleeve it and then sleeve the sleeve. They don't make oversized sleeves that I have found yet, but I haven't had a whole lot of time to do a lot of research yet.

seams to me that if you sleeve a sleeve you would have a heat issue with that cyl

It is a dry sleeve engine, no water near it. My only concern would be different expansion and contraction rates.

Gonna start some research tonight, or just look for another engine.

Wow. That makes MY stomach hurt...

Well after some research I have found a place in Lincoln that has oversized sleeves. My brother is tracking down a boring bar and we'll do it in frame. So at this point it sounds like cyclinder #2 is gonna get a new sleeve, piston and rings. The other 3 will get honed and new rings, and all will get new rod bearings. So hopefully things will get back on track here in the next few weeks. Been scraping nasty 30 year old gaskets off of everything. They are all of a paper type of gasket, including the head gasket.

Anyhow will keep you updated as the project progresses.

Thanks

Pam
