So the heat sheild that extends behind the front passenger side wheel was holding on by a thread. I picked up a 3 inch hose clamp and just like that, problem solved. I'm a little worried that I tightened down on the clamp too much. If the shield is up against the exhaust, does that defeat its purpose?

Junk...I live relatively close to hackensack. I would very much like to swing by the meeting. Is there a person I should contact, or should I just show up?

Another stupid question:
I came across some posts on this but I wasn't able to make sense of what needed to be removed or not. A couple of months ago I purchased a TRD air filter. AFter removing the wing nut and the 3 clamps on the lid I hit an obstacle...the lid only comes up about 2 inches. Before throwing caution to the wind and pulling up on the thing as hard as could, I decide to consult the forum. ANy suggestions?

Cheers.

disconnect the air intake hose from the throttle body so that you do not have to add a new air intake hose to your shopping list just yet.

welcome and good intro. It had me all bleary eyed since the first repair I did on my truck myself was the antenna and the second was to fix the rattling heat shield on the exhaust with a hose clamp. Sorry to say, this probably means you are going to drop a birfield on your foot in a few months :flipoff2:

NJ: Do NOT just pull up on that air filter lid. If you do, you'll likely damage the hose going to the TB which will cause you problems and cost you some $$.

You should disconnect the hose from the lid prior to pulling it off. I just unbolt the two small bolts that hold the MAF to the lid. They're like 10mm bolts. While you're in there, you can clean out the tuna can that's probably all full of grunge.

What's preventing the lid from coming up?? Interference with the threaded rod that goes through the center??

Typically when I remove mine, I loosen the air hose clamp at the throttle body, lift the lid up (light pressure on the threaded rod, if it is snagging the lid) to get it detached from the air filter housing, then lightly rotate the lid and air hose at the TB to get it to come loose. Then set the whole thing aside to do whatever.

The new air filter is in, the cats are quiet, and I've been bitten by the bug. I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions, and for welcoming me to the forum. I look forward to spending my time and money on needless mods...that is until I get married.

loquito...I would appreciate the maintenance link. I can't seem to find it. I know that I need to repack the birfield joints (i think that's what they're called). The large ball joints have two colors of grease mixing on them. I'm aware that this is a problem, but I need to save up some cash to get it done. I'm a 25 year old grad student (that means I'm broke), who spent all his savings on a LC...if that's not love...

cheers

Hi sorry it took a while to get back to you. I ahve been searching the house and this board for the mentioned thread, I can't find it. I t was posted between Oct 04 and now ( I am pretty new here ) Any way I'll keep looking, but in the mean time this thread has all the same info from the same people just posted earlyer. Enjoy the reading :flipoff2:

"Needless mods" that's crazy talk and you were doing so well, until then! :ban:

Smack! "Thank you sir may I have another!" What can I say...rookie mistakes. But I appreciate the hazing.

In my own defense though, the only "rock crawling" my truck does is pulling onto a pebble driveway at the Jersey Shore. Incorporating wheeling in my life is probably the most important mod I have to make.
