I (gladly) traded in an '07 FKC on a new '11 Tacoma, at Performance Toyota in KC, Kansas. One of the dealerships I laughed at in Central Texas told me, after finding out that I was driving up there for the trade, that the "numbers would probably change" when I got there. I told him that would be on me, and I would walk out on the spot.

A couple of weeks after the deal, the same guy emailed to see if I was still in the market. My reply was simply a picture of the paper tag, with the Performanance Toyota plate frame. ;)
I love hearing stories like this. I know living in a major market that most dealers don’t care as they will just find some other sucker who will pay but it’s so satisfying when they do follow up with you and you get to show them the better deal you got elsewhere. Heck I enjoy just letting them know my last two purchases were out of state so I have no problem extending my search radius outside of the immediate metro.

About 15 years ago we took a test drive in a new Sequoia. My wife loves the sequoia and we needed a new vehicle. The salesman could not believe we were not going to make the purchase… remember it was at least 15 yrs ago and he said “ this is a $54,000 automobile what’s not to like?” Of course any other deluxe type SUV was around $42,000.
Two years ago I bought a High Country Chevy Suburban….YIKES! Hard to believe she wants to trade it for the Sequoia. Oh well, I don’t really mind

Gotta love the mind games dealers play, i assume they wouldnt do em if it didnt work. I also love the rage quitters...."if you can find a better price, i'd like the dealer info so i can purchase some units for inventory".

The same goes for motorcycles here in Central Texas. Bought my '07 Yamaha FJR1300 brand new from Heinen's, in Osseo, MN, and had it shipped to Texas by Keyboard Carriers. It was a No Reserve auction on eBay, and when I reached out to Heinen's to set up the transportation and paperwork, the guy said they would never do a No Reserve again. ;)

While I bought my 2016 Honda F6B fairly locally, (it was from Barger's up in Waco), about an hour away. My search was nationwide, and while there were a few available that were priced less, adding the transportation put them over the top. Central Texas Motorsports, (now RideNow), in Georgetown, TX, about 15 miles from my house, had the exact same bike, and at MSRP. The one I bought in Waco was $7K off MSRP, and they just wanted to get it off the floor. The funny thing is that I found out Honda had sent money to dealers who still had this model on the floor, to get them moved out, a fact that I mentioned to the sales guy at Central Texas, AFTER I bought my bike in Waco. I told him that not only were they trying to get MSRP, but more considering the money Honda had paid them. He laughed, and said, "Hey, I just work here...".

I laugh at the folks that say, "If you can find a better deal, bring it to me so I can match it!". If I find a better deal, I buy it there. What's in it for me to get a match?

FWIW - auto shipping is less expensive than I would have thought in the lower 48 anyway. The last time I had a truck shipped - I paid $400 for a transport to pick up the truck and deliver about 500 miles. It was cheaper than I though it would be. That was pre-covid. I have no idea what the costs are now. But it might be cheaper than a flight and fuel if you didn't want to take the road trip.

The way it worked with the shipping broker I used was essentially a "we'll pick it up when we have a transport passing by with an open spot" and you basically wait until that happens and it's not a scheduled pickup, but they let you know when they'll be dropping it off.

Things have changed for auto shipping, in fact most shipping. I have shipped a few Land Cruisers and 50’s Thunderbirds within the last 3 years. From NJ to FL was $1450.00 open trailer. From Washington (the one near Oregon) to NJ for an FJ40 was $1700 open trailer. From Michigan to NJ was $1600 open trailer and most recently 2 FJ40 differentials $300.00 and a set of disk brake conversion parts $325.00. I don’t even know what a postage stamp costs anymore

I have posted this before but… after the 40 was shipped from Washington…a friend of the person I bought it from who didn’t know it was sold, texted the previous owner while driving from a highway in Montana and said….”hey, isn’t this your Land Cruiser?”

What are the odds of that happening? She then sent me the photo before it even arrived in NJ

Here it is in front of my house 3 days later

Shipping sounds about right. I prefer closed trailer for a new vehicle, as some dealers force preform the pdi before a vehicle leaves their lot. That being said, just add into the cost analysis before sealing the deal, same thing with anything else at the dealer.

Side note, these days with alot of information freely available online and alot of it simplified (example buyers contract has a Federal Truth in Lending Disclosure), folks seem to handover control over a car purchase and all the working parts to the dealer believing they have some kind of fiduciary obligation. Or my favorite line "your control over pricing is greatest when you are at the dealership".

I wanted to say thanks for the advice on here. I have a 1958 on it’s way from Naperville Toyota in Chicago right now with @Riverrunner. After shipping, I am saving about 6k compared to what I could find here in Texas with a bunch of bloated add-ons I didn’t want.

The process was pretty smooth. My only small complaint was that the paperwork had to be overnighted back and forth. Seems like in 2024 we should be able to do it all digitally with docusign. But overall, good experience so far.

Be sure to let your local dealers know and give them one of these :flipoff2:

In that case, you can add “Lakewood Toyota” to the list as well as PineBelt Chevrolet although not a toyota dealer

Hey hey hey, they offer those fancy red braided usb cables that bring so much value to any new vehicle.

My response to that has always been that it doesn’t add any value when I decide to trade or sell.

how much are the dealer fees (whether fee or addons) in total?

Edit: the doc fee is $317 and if thats the only taxable fee, smoking good value.

To be a little fair to dealers… it appears to be Gulf States Toyota that needs to pound sand.

I bought my Tundra in Temple; trust me, my experience with Austin area dealers was exactly the same as when I bought my Tacoma in Kansas. They make 'em in San Antonio, so not sure why Austin dealers are so proud, other than there are a lot of monied suckers living here. I got a call on Friday from Toyota of Cedar Park, from some schwarmmeister, saying he wanted to buy that Tundra. The VM went to the trash bin, but not without a good chuckle.
