I am considering buying a 1987 4Runner here locally(NM) and wanted to get some input on how much I should consider paying. I don't have all of the details yet, but I know that the engine was replaced with another 22RE that was rebuilt 80000 ago. Tranny was rebuilt 50000 ago and is a five speed. It has a rear ARB locker with 4.88 gearing and will include the 4.56 and 4.10 gears. Front axle has Tru-Trac. Front bumper is a TJM and rear is a Smittybilt Tube bumper. Front has a WARN M5000 or M6000 winch(can't remember for sure). It has a custom full length roof rack as well. Overall the truck body is in really good shape. Has two tiny rust spots that I would need to deal with, but is otherwise rust free. It would need new brakes, but will include the front brakes and calipers from a 2004 Tacoma that could be installed.
It is a one owner vehicle and I am friends with the current owner and know that he takes really good care of his vehicles. I don't have pictures, but can post some up if I am able to go take another look tomorrow. What do you think a fair price would be based on what I have mentioned.

Thanks in advance.

I would check your local craigslist and see what they go for in your area. I know over here in the PNW they are pretty valuable. Tires are something to consider. If he has re-geared it I would guess it was because it has a lift and oversized tires. To replace 33s its $750 plus
Anyhow if it is modded how you want it makes it a good deal to buy a rig that is already done.
If it is in really good shape like it sounds I think $4-6 would be reasonable. He probably has that in it in aftermarket parts. Just my 2cents
I hope it works out for you.

sounds like a solid $3500 truck...a few years back i found an 88 down there (orig. purchased from ken john's i think), lived in town it's whole life, immaculate body and interior, basically all original (with exception of the wagon wheels) 2500
i realize that the bumpers, rack and lockers bump the price, but you never get back what you put into something

If the interior is decent then I'd say $2500-$3000. Basically look at it as what do you think you could actually get for it if it was yours in this economy? If it were 85 then of course there would more of a premium for the efi and straight axle. But like notsomint said you can't make your money back on the goodies you install.

Thanks for all the responses. I have been looking at CL lately to get a better idea of local prices, but none of the ones I have seen are setup anywhere close to as well as this one. I will do a bit more research, but am leaning towards buying it. If so, I'll post up some pictures when I can. Forgot to take some when I went down last week.

Pricing is pretty much what you are willing to pay. I am cheap and will generally estimate accordingly, but I do know that all those parts are worth something and if that is similar to how you want to build it then that is worth something to you.

One thing I would ask is if the timing chain has been done. Generally at 90k-100k is the recommended replacement interval for those, so that will be due soon so keep that in mind during negotiations.

I bought my cruiser and most would say I paid too much, but I got what I wanted and I haven't thought twice about it since.

^ Exactly ^

It's worth exactly what you're willing to pay. A 25-year old vehicle is off the NADA charts, it's a purchase of passion. I don't remember what I paid for my truck 10 years ago, but I'm sure most people would think I was insane. It was worth every penny to me.

Thanks for the advice. The price is very reasonable to me considering all the extras that this 4R has. It also comes from a person I know and trust who has owned it since new. Knowing the full history of the truck relieves some stress.

So you would be the second owner? That is impressive. Well pictures will be required as proof if/when this thread gets the "well I bought it" post.
