Power Steering pump - rebuild or replace?

When ordering the seal kit from Rockauto it looks like in their picture a bearing is included. Is that correct or is everyone ordering better quality? Also does it include the block o-ring? Anything else needed?

I just rebuilt mine, the rebuild was pretty simple and straightforward (just be careful with the drive gear - check to ensure it seats fully and that you don't mar the teeth.) The removal and replace was pretty simple too, but make sure you have all the hoses you want to replace before you pull it off. Also, I found that 3/8" LP hose didn't fit on my system, I needed 7/16" and that's hard to come by. My old hoses though were not reuseable, they were brittle, cracked and in bad shape.

Btw, I started with the exact same leak you have. And when I flushed the system the fluid that came out was brown/black and smelled burnt. Definitely time to go.

The bearing is not included, in most cases are not needed, still good.

Why would Rockauto be better or worse quality than any other parts store? I usually get bearings from a local bearing house, could spec a precision, high speed bearing, but would be a waste, the application doesn't need it and would not benefit.

Like most parts stores, Rockauto doesn't make anything. When you order, the parts are shipped from a wholesale warehouse, the same ones the other parts stores order from.

In the pic (FJ62 kit), note the part numbers, the first one is Edelmann, the second Gates, not sure about the third. In other words all of them are resellers, if you are picky about the graphics on the box, buy the higher $$ one, the bag contents in the box are the same.:hillbilly:

The 1FZ kit from Edelmann, Gates, etc, include the block o-ring. The high pressure hose rings are not included.

Just did mine this weekend. My bearing was toast. I used all Mr. T parts. which you have to order the bearing and block seal seperate.

Fear is a strong motivator.
All these guys successfully rebuilding them tells you it can be done with a little care.
I did mine and replaced the Low Pressure hose at same time ( I used Gates 5/8" and new stainless hose clamps).
Had to cut old hose to get it off. Make sure you get oil hose and not coolant hose, they are different.

It's neat to see how a vane pump works and they are machined to pretty tight tolerances.

The Gates seal kit I used is OEM spec rings.
It took me an afternoon to do it, but it is an enjoyable job. Bleeding was easy but others have had problems.

Make sure you get a new high pressure hose fitting (it does both sides of banjo) and pump to engine O-ring (dealership).

My bearing was fine, but I put in a new SKF for $10 as I wasn't sure going into it.
I would not use a Chinese bearing. Tearing it apart for $5 savings is foolish, even at Mexico labor rates.
Duh anything bought from dealer will be good as new but if I want to pay $75K I could just get a new truck.....Don't be scared.
