I'm debating converting to power rather than fix the center arm on the 40. For those of you that have done this on the older style 40's I could use some input. What is a good donor column? I have a double crank pully, but where to get a double fan pully? What is the easiest and cheapest way to go? What is a good estimate of total cost if I do the fab and work?

Any suggestions would be great.

You dont really need a new column for either saginaw or mini truck. For saginaw buy or make a firewall bushing to locate the shaft. For mini truck dissassemble the old style column and replace the steering shaft with a 10/72 or later shaft nside the original column. Mini truck is cheaper and easier and better for most people unles you are rockcrawling a lot.

I would say that minitruck is for anyone running less thatn 35's

Also, you mentioned not wanting to fix the center arm. Mini does not replace that.

Keep the stock column.

Box and pump ~$50 at a junkyard
Weld on plate (depends on where you get it from) ~$50
2 flaming river U joints $120 (really nice stuff)
Lines ~$40
What type of steering you want will depend on if you have a SO or not.

So add ~$100 on for steering just to be on the large side.

If you go the route of cutting the stock column, I would be interested in what is left of the stock steering box.

Mace's list is good, but IMO his prices are based on someone with a LOT of patience. I would double his prices before I walked out the door, and then be happy if I came home the same weekend with $$ left over!

P/s

I have the brackets you need to do the mini truck P/S. They are 175.00 for both the pump and gearbox brackets including the hardware you need to mount them. I have sold many of them on this board so feel free to ask the members opinions of them.
You will neen a Saginaw pump (40.00 rebuilt)and minii gearbox (100.00 used)
High pressure line (JTOutfitters), return hose, belts, Pulley(Ican tell you where you get it),Rag joint or new steering column, Rebuild kit for center arm, new tie rod ends. A return line cooler if you want one.
I would think a real # for the cost is around $500 for a complete P/S and steering rebuild.
You can see some pics at the site below, let me know if your interested. Bill

Toss that worn out center arm and go with a saginaw. Easy to find, easy to install and parts are readily available.

With the mini steering you not only keep the POS center arm you also limit articulation having a rod rubbing against the shock on D side.

Thanks for the info everyone. I was thinking more towards the sag conversion because it would mean no major changes later down the road IF I go SOA and 35. Thanks for the link for the pump bracket. That was one of my concerns.
