Hi Everybody!

I'm new here. I've got a problem sourcing the stering gear for my gorgeous 82 FJ45. It's a long bed, original everything, four speed manual transmission it came with power steering from the dealership. In 1982 these were not sold in the US but remained popular elsewhere. I've attached a photo of the part, which is called a steering gear over here but which I think we call a steering box in the states.

1) Was this part issued stock with any other Toyota models? From which year to which year?
2) Can anyone supply the part new or used at a reasonable price?

I'll gladly pay in advance via credit card, pay pal, or whatever. Sellers should be aware that I live in the middle east, and so I'll need the part sent by DHL or FedEX only, I'll take care of the shipping costs and send specific instructions on how to fill our the Airway Bill so that the part arrives here and not anywhere else.

Picture below, THanks very much for your time and thoughts on this! you can email me directly or post here, whatever works for ya.

Cheers,

Sarah

Early FJ45 had the same steering components as the FJ40s. In 1979 the US started getting FJ40s with factory power steering and parts may still be available, but pricey. I would check with cruiserdan on this site and he could help you with what's still available for the FJ40s. Just have to make sure they didn't change the steering in the 45s so that it's different than the 40s.

I assume the picture you posted is not from your truck. That's a picture of a 79-85 Toyota mini truck power steering box mounted on an aftermarket bracket using bolts instead of rivets, which is not a factory setup. If that is a picture of your's you might make sure of would you have first.

PS I really like that 45, post some more pictures in the 45 forum.

Hi John,

CHeers for the reply, and the excellent factiods. I'll see if I can't track cruiser dan down. Yeah, it's a picture I snagged off the web, it was clearer than the ones I got with my camera. Sloppy, I know. I can get the part new from Toyota here, but it will cost 25% of what I paid for the entire restoration to date. So forget about that.

Any thoughts that anybody has to contribute regarding a better way to go about this are most welcome. Maybe I should swap out the entire steering assembly, top to bottom in favor of something more easily obtained?

Cheers,

Sarah

Using minitruck PS

Sarah - many people have used a minitruck steering gearbox on a custom pedestal to add power steering to FJ40s/45s through the years. I've done 3 conversions, and they work well and are close to stock in look/feel. There is custom work you will need to do to mount the PS pump. You will have to buy a bracket and remove the frame rivets holding your steering box bracket to your frame. Also, the steering columns got 3/4" longer in 1979 and some '79 and later folks have a bit of a problem with getting the steering column to seat against the floor properly after the conversion. You can space it up from the floor, however. This conversion is not too hard, and the same guys that restored your truck could easily pull this off.

If you buy a Toyota PS gearbox, be sure to get the high pressure hose, too, as that part is expensive from the dealer. You can run a so-called 'Saginaw' (GM) pump, but I have always used a minitruck (Hi-lux) pump, lines and cooler and the remote reservoir that comes on '79-85 minitrucks. Look on the Ih8mud tech pages for some FJ40 PS information. Ideally, you'd have someone send you the *entire* PS setup from a 4x4 solid axle Toyota minitruck, then buy the pedestal mount ($85-150) and then go from there. It's pretty obvious how it all goes together. The pump mounting is the most challenging part, and even it's not too hard.

i found on ccot you can get the housing for the p/s for 300. then you can probably buy the innards from the dealer or something. i believe landpimp posted something about how the innards from a mini truck box is the same part # as the fj40 box and those parts will fit the box

Hi All:

Sarah, greetings from a cooler, moister, less sandy place! ;-)

Listen to Steve H. - he knows what he speaks of!

You probably could swap a Toyota HiLux pick-up (aka "mini-truck") PS gearbox onto to your rig, but some custom mods would be required.

Best of luck with your Land Cruiser!

Alan

Thank Youuuuu...

Hi Guys,

Tony Toyota goes back into the shop to receive his transplanted Steering Assembly tonight! The boneyards here are awash in mangled hi-lux trucks, providing an unlimited source of parts plus an excellent reminder to wear your seatbelt. Hmmm...

Thanks ever so much for the advice and tips. More from here in a couple of weeks, when something new and interesting will break.

Thanks again,

Sarah
