My PS box is leaking on my 86 4runner. I have another I was going to put in. Is it as simple as undoing the bolts from the intermediate shaft, removing the gear box bolts and replacing as the manual says? I imagine you need to turn the worm shaft on the new to match the old one. Or is it a real pain and I should throw it in the shop?

It's about that easy... You may want to break the ball joint loose on the steering arm before you get the box loose from the frame. Also the steering shaft clamp bolt has to come all the way out to get the shaft off th steering box...

I did it myself(in my '91) when I had more time than money. Mechanically easy, basically just unhooking and rehooking stuff. You'll need a puller($35 for a good one) for the Pittman arm. Take your time and you'll be fine.

I did mine at my apartment parking lot not to long ago, had my roommate help me wrestle out the old one, they are pretty heavy. I'd say it was easy though.

If you would like, you can read my write-up on it: Power Steering Box Replacement Write-Up
