I'm buying that 87 4runner that I talked about in the other thread. He was correct it is lacking some power. It certainly has a major exhaust leak at the junction of the manifold and the exhaust pipe. It is missing a gas cap and also needs new plugs and wires.

How much power will a significant leak near the engine take away? How about the plugs and wires?

Okay, thanks guys. Any other ideas on power loss? It runs smooth, it just seems to be missing a little power. The motor is clean, the front end has been redone, and it all seems put together right.

Maybe one I get the leak fixed it'll be quiet enough to make some better judgments. Most of the exhaust is getting out the leak. He mentioned the rotor and fuel pump might need changing as well.

Maybe I should ask what the typical rpms for certain speeds are to see if it truly dogging or if it jus seems that way because it is so loud.

If the timing chain is off a tooth you would see a lack of power... If you have a timing gun, check it out. If you can't get the timing mark anywhere close to where it should be, then there's a good chance the chain is off a tooth...

the rpm at a certain speed, that question could go all over the place gearing and tire size play a roll in all that.

jerod is right though if they just did the front end then i would make sure that the timing is right.

Well the tires look a bit taller. Once I get it down to the house I'll get a good read on the specs.

It is an SR5, 5 speed, the auto hubs, and minimal body rust around the rear fenders.

It is just begging for some white wagon wheels and a good tune up.
