I've got a '90 pickup with the 22RE and 5speed (W56, I think?)

Lately, I have noticed that the shift into third is shorter than normal, like it is not engaging the gears completely. Typically, it stays in gear just fine.

Any idea if this is going to grow into a worse problem???

That's odd.... I'd pull the shifter and see if anything's awry.... Although if it's only 3rd. and not 1st and 5th, then you won't likely see any issues... as the shift arm just goes into another funny shaped shift arm... You can't force (not too hard....) it up into it's normal position?

Go count the number of bolts on the rear case of the transfer case should be 5 or 7.

I may be wrong, but I think 5 means a chain driven case, and a G56 trans, and 7 means a gear driven case with a W56, or something like that.

If your truck came with auto hubs, or the ADD system (I can't remember which) it may have a G56? trans, which may change things.....

Pull the shifter boot off. Look down along the shift lever to see if the rubber shifter seat has disintegrated. It likely has, both my '89 and '94 ones had. Either get an OEM or Marlin Crawler replacement shifter seat. I like the Marlin Crawler ones I have.

Edit: you may wish to change that little plastic tip at the end of the shifter down in the transmission. Marlin Crawler has em too. I had gotten OEM as they didn't have them yet.
