So 4WD solenoid failure is starting to become more common on 62 series trucks as they get older, and unfortunately pairs of used solenoids are ridiculously expensive. My solenoids acted up a while ago, and I was able to get them going again with some WD40 and shoving a steel wire down each hole and manually actuating the mechanism. Unfortunately my red one gave up again this weekend, and at this point I need something I can count on.
Some clever folks on ih8mud years ago came up with this guy:
Toyota 25860-62010
Readily available from the aftermarket for dirt cheap, and bolts into the factory bracket. However, every person I've seen on ih8mud seems to use this red solenoid as a replacement for both the red AND blue solenoids. Because they blue one is keyed different, they have to shave off a lug on the solenoid so the blue plug would connect. Obviously this is *technically* fine, as electrically the solenoids are the same, however my particular sensibilities would just be forever annoyed seeing that blue plug stuck on a red solenoid.
So I thought if later Toyotas used "red" style solenoids with the key in the same position as the 62 4WD solenoids, then maybe there is some later "blue" style solenoid with the key in the other position. So I embarked on a mission, and spent way too much time combing through pages and pages of Toyota VSVs. However it was not a complete waste of time, as I finally found it!
Toyota 90910-12271
The blue brother to the "modern" red solenoid that everyone has been using. I ordered an aftermarket one, and I can confirm that it fits right into the factory bracket, and the factory 62-series blue plug fits perfectly without needing to modify anything.
