2005 LX470, 297,000 Miles
2 weeks ago I replaced my leaky steering rack (MAVAL brand), intermittent steering shaft, and CV Axles. After doing this, the OEM power steering pump in my vehicle appeared to fail. The steering began to get sloppy, and eventually the power steering completely failed over the course of a week.
So I ordered a new one and had my mechanic install it, and got the vehicle back today. On the way home, the power steering had the same issues: It started to feel like rubber bands, then got really soft, and went through periods of very hard and very soft steering. Both directions, back and forth, so now the new pump has also appeared to have failed (Possibly a faulty pump from the manufacturer).
The pump was a brand new Atlantic Automotive Engineering (AAE), and they are apparently tested to load before shipping so this is strange. I also got a VGRS code on the dash, so I jacked the vehicle up and attempted a VGRS reset (Turning the steering to lock out, both left and right side, about 20 times, then driving straight back and forth), but it didn't seem to help the steering. The reservoir dropped from between min and max fluid level, to below min fluid level when locking out the steering in both directions, and returned to normal after straightening the wheels...and the VGRS code still remains.

Any ideas? Any trouble shooting options? My mechanic and I are both blown away that the new pump would fail. Unfortunately he doesn't have a pressure tester for the power steering pump. :/
