Buy the product, not the story.

Since you can't shift it into gear, you have to treat that as a blown transmission that needs a rebuild.

Just sitting on a shelf shouldn't stop it from shifting IMHO, not saying the seller is lying, but clearly there is something to address.

Plan on worst case scenario for your $$$ so you don't get burned

Would not buy this without personal inspection. Could be something as simple as shift forks not in the correct grooves. Removing the top would also get an better idea of the condition of transmission. Unless the transfer case has been replaced should have a date code on it.

If it is from a BJ40, then it is the perfect box to bolt up behind a 15BFT in a 40. Grunty little suckers.
Doubt it is from a BJ40. Besides the wrong top cover on the H55F most were BJ42s by 10/82 when the H55F started. Few remaining BJ40s made after 10/82 were still four speeds. Also the bellhousing looks to be 11/84 plus. Haven't found any BJ4X listings for 11/82 plus.

I can't believe it won't shift gears just because it has been sitting on the shelf for 16 years. I've got gear boxes sitting in my shed for 30 years or more that work just fine. There's more to that story.
I am pretty sure something is not right with it,hopefully minor problem.

When I had my accident the transmission was struck in 4th. When I took it apart for the rebuild didn't see anything and was fine. But when assembling the thrust washer at the rear of the gear box would slip forward and lock everything up. I also found a synchro was slightly out of place that also caused it to lock up. I just used a screw driver to pop the synchro back into place. Try removing the top cover and look at the synchro's.
