I need some help figuring out what I have that is making a knocking noise. The car steering wonders just a little on the road, but nothing like my old 97 Land Cruiser. This replacement Toyota steering rack has 15k miles. The original one was replaced last year because it was leaking. The tires are on the ground for the video and my sweet woman is shaking the steering wheel back and forth for me. I can feel the knock when I hold the rod between the steering rack and tie rod end. I used my fancy mechanic's stethoscope and hear it loudest at this area. I pulled the boot back and expected to see the ball joint under it moving back and forth, but I don't see it moving so much to make this noise. The outer tie rod end looks good and the noise is more quit when using the stethoscope directly on it. The outer TRE is pretty new too. I looked and felt the small u-joint at the steering rack input shaft, and it feels and looks tight. I am surprised how much the steering rack moves back and forth on it's rubber bushings. Seems excessive, but I'm no professional. Is the steering rack moving too much? Any help or suggestions I can get will be most appreciated. Turn up the volume and thanks for looking.
