Not sure, I never have, but it does have the provisions (takes 2 seconds to lock). Mabey on a windy day I might be worried about my trailer flipping over, the lock would prevent it from twisting axially more than say 30* :D:D:D

I will snag a pic of my pintle setup, I beleive it came by way of Military Surplus, but not 100% sure?

good point actually, if you have a high CG trailer and went over big rocks etc, it could tip over with the swivel. But then again, with the swivel locked, some metal is gonna be seriously stressed somewhere in that case too....

As for offcamber trail use, I rather let the my trailer flipped over itself without affecting my truck's longitudinal axis during the critical moment.

Cheers,

Agreed... the lock is for the windy day in the parking lot... :D (actually it came with mine and I never intend to use it ;))

Ok I showed Snooks idea to a machinist, welder, etc. He said that the part Snook added would take alot of articulation of the system away. It would take out twisting movement which would be prevelent in 4x4ing, the pintle system is designed for the twisting movements. He suggested having a rubber doughnut cut out that would take up all the slack, but the ring could still twist on rough roads. This is similar to what Cman suggested using rubber to quieten it down. I am going to have this rubber doughnut made early next week and will try it out and report back. There is a company in Nashvegas that will make to order anything out of rubber. We will see..
My dimos will be 3/4" thick, 4.5 " O.D. with a 2" hole centered for the ball. This makes sense. Will it work? inquiring minds what to know........ :)

Steve

Before you spend the money on fabrication, Just slip an old piece of split radiator hose over the inside of the lunette. That's all you really need.

Yes, but only in a fixed pintle system... I would lose 0 travel if I added more material....

Update,

Well I have the system installed and it doesn't make a lot of noise on the highway, streets, etc. Will get the rubber piece made next week and will report back.

Yes, keep in mind that my pintle hook w/ gap filler do resticted "roll" or twisting movement while leaving yaw and pitch intacted. However as long you have a M416 type trailer where the neck loop that is fully twistable 360 degree then that is considered a full articulation.

Cheers,

Here is a photo I took during my restored M416 project two years ago during the sandblasting work.

Look at the upper left photo, at the end of neck loop, there is a small but very stiff spring along w/ internal greased tube for ease of twistable so once this "swivelable" neck loop and "tight" pintle hook comes together, it perform flawless for me without losing any articulation.

One time, I did lose this gap filler due to my haste hookup; I accidentally left this piece on my rear bumper and drive off. Without this piece, the sound of clunking is so terrible so I made the second one right away!

Cheers,

Seems to be a lot of worry and work over a little bit of rattle. I hardly even notice it,on road or off. If I pay attention I can certainly hear it, but it really isn't that big a deal.

Mark...

Snook,

Great pics... Nice system.

took the regular ball mount off my trailer. Interestingly, I can slide a 2" ball mount in there, might be a good way to go for cheap mounting of an eye.

so I looked around for eyes and pintle hooks. Most are way overdesigned for a little trailer. Darn things are expensive. Dang, will cost me a good chunk of the cost of the trailer itself... I hate that!

Best place to buy these kinds of parts? Need an inexpensive swivel eye first.

Also, is the LC bolt pattern 3 3/8" x 1 3/4" ? seems very close.

E9999,

I bought the eye at Tractor Supply C. They didn't have all the parts, had to go to another supply place to get the rest of the hitch. These parts are expensive your correct, but worth it. If you have a TSC close you might get lucky and get everything there.

Actually, pintle hooks comes in three basic types.

Label A: For light duty use with option to use ball or eye. Ball sizes - 1 7/8" to 2" dia ball can be switched however the bottom of the removable bolt will hit and drag ony the ground during off roading. - 1 to 6 tons rated

Label B: For very heavy duty use, for eye use only (commerical use). - 3 to 45 tons rated

Label C: Mine is a hybrid type "Combination Pintle Hook and Ball Hitch" or "Holland Duplex pintle hook ", one piece cast iron. The 2" ball itself is 10,000 lbs rated and the pintle hook itself is 20,000lbs rated! I only need 1/20th of it!

I can use this same hybrid pintle hook to pick up any rental trailer if need to. Any older trailer's tongue may only fit on a smaller 1 7/8" ball, not 2" but haven't across it.

Cheers,

Snook,

Great info. I have the light set-up but mine is rated at 8,000 pounds. My trailer probably weighs 500-600 pounds unloaded.
