My husband died in December and I have a friend interested in purchasing our '74 FJ55 but I know nothing about it. How can I find out the engine size? I have been told to count the spark plugs to find out how many cylinders. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Post a few pictures of the rig and there's a lot of knowledgable guys on here that tell you what you have and what it is worth . If no camera is available you can call your local Toyota dealer with the vin number and they will tell you what it came with from the factory

where are you located? someone close by may be able to help. it's hard to say what is in the rig without a few pics. lots of older rigs have been modifed with different engine combos.

If it is stock and a 74 it should have the transition year motor. It should be a 6 cylender with the oil filter on the passenger side of the engine. Early year 74's had 3 speed transmisions and the later year 74's had 4 speeds.

Not a lot of help but pics would help alot.

Interesting handle for a widow. Did your husband also have a FJ40? You know the 55 is known as a Pig-that's better than nothing. Engine displacement is not necessarily determined by the number of cylinders. He probably wants to know if it's the stock Toyota 6 cylinder or a transplant. Counting the spark plug wires can tell you if it's 6 cylinder, but there's a chance it could be a Chevy rather than Toyota. Best bet is to share a photo here for confirmation, or have the friend come over and check it out in person if he can.
