So, we had noticed a bit of a leak in the gastank of TWRECKS , but only with a full tank. Wet around the upper lip of the seam all around, couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from. Figured, on Friday, we'll just drop the tank, put in another, no big deal. Right.
Got the old tank out no problem. It was only held up by 3 bolts. I had broken off the 4th years ago and never fixed it. I took this opportunity to drill out the old bolt, only took all day after breaking off one drill bit deep inside the old bolt. Ended up destroying that old captured nut in the rearmost DS gastank mount. Used a grinder to take off the innermost end of the closed gastank mount, Tried to bolt in the newer gastank without re-capturing that nut, just using endwrenches. PIA but I got it done.
Now the good part. The big rubber hose that lets the gas in is too short. This is not a stretchable hose. Hmmm....says Pighead.
Tried the hose off the Pickle, Also a '74 tank...hose is a little bit longer but still too short. Did not try the hose off the blue Pig, 'cuz it's the only running rig right now.
What else to do but put the old tank back in and half-fill it.
And start a thread, What year is this tank? And what year rubber fill hose to order from C.Dan?
This new tank has the same 4 outlets for the separator as my '74, same 2 fuel inlet/outlet as my '74...only difference I can see is the indented filler side and the shorter fuel inlet. Everybody run outside and crawl under your rigs and tell me what year this tank is. Thank you.

In the second picture, the tank on the *RIGHT* matches my 72 tank from the looks of it. Funny, this thread is quite relevant to me because my stock tank and my 40 gal tank both leak at the filler necks so I need to do the same to mine.

I had to double check because my wife was talking about her true blood crap and distracted me, my 72 has the longer inlet tube.

'78...that would explain it. Those friggin '78s.

incidentally, the tank on my 8-77 production pig does NOT have the recess, it is like the earlier tanks shown. that makes it one of the 9-77 changes.

The blacker of the tanks(right side) looks similar to my 71 tank before I pulled it. If you want, I'll track down my pictures of it.

Um, that IS your tank...no need for the pics. Thanks though..

niiiice:lol:

I had gas tank woes also. The four vents in row and indents indicate the late model tanks, same with the smaller volume by a few gallons. .

I put a 79' tank on my 69'. In the process, I did something that would potentially make the list of "crazy stuff the PO did". I could not find the right length filler, and mine was too short. I have the right one on another pig, but did not want to sacrifice it. So I scored a piece of some galvanized metal tubing of the same diameter, cut my filler hose in half, and clamped that metal tube in between as an extender. My original filler neck also didn't have the right vents ( I like gas tank vents, it is really hot outside here) so I had to update it to a modern one. The modern filler didn't have the same bolt pattern, so that also took a little work. Maybe ghetto, but it has never leaked.

And I also had to use 1/2" spacers/bushings between the tank and the body to properly space it. I've been driving it like that at least once a week since 2006.
