anybody else running Pierce Winches?

I have a 12,500 lb Pierce worm gear winch

I had installed their Ball Bearing winch motors:

the winch alone is 95lbs...plates and cable and roller


.....140lbs+- or something like that

1) that is realatively light as compaired to the 1/4 plate that the winch brackets are mounted to

2) not a fence

SWEET Winch.

Old school/industrial look. I am in love. Is that 3/8" or 7/16" cable? "I love me somes big winch." Only thing that would be cooler would be steel tracks for the fj40 and a turret for the back.

And this after I posted how proud I was that my 2500lb. winch dragged out my f350.

Gear reduction winches seem to be more reliable than regular planetary winches. Is that the case? What are the advantages / disadvantages between the two?

"A. There are three common gearing systems, worm gear, spur gear and planetary
gear. They all do the same job, gear down the high speed motor to a low speed
high torque winch drum. The gear reduction ratio is by how much the motor's
output revolutions are reduced for the spindle. The greater the reduction, the
more revolutions the motor has to turn for one spindle revolution and the less
the motor has to work for that revolution. The difference in the gearing
systems is mainly in their transfer efficiency.
The worm gear has a transfer effiency of 35-40%. This causes the winch to be
self-braking even under heavy loads, but this means the unit will need a clutch
mechanism for free spooling. Worm gears offer the most reduction, very high
reliability, built-in braking mechnism, and generally a slower winching speed.
The spur and planetary gear systems have efficiencies of 75% and 65%
respectively. This means they have a tendency to free spool when loaded,
therefore a braking mechanism is needed. Planatary gears are the most common
and provide both strength and smooth operation with good resistance to torque
loads. Only the WARN M8274 has a spur gear due to its different design
characteristics."

i have a desert dynamics

its a heavy s.o.b , but its a mean winch , im planning to put it in the back of my cruiser since i already have a ramsey 10 k worm drive in the front .

i did have one instance when the plate that holds the motor on at the back broke and the bolts for the gear drive sheared (those stupid allen bolts, m8-1.5" long if i remember right) though it was from a serious serious shock load .

i have since fixed it , i think the shock would of annihilated a lesser winch .

oh desert dynamics no longer exists i believe they got bought out by pierce and my winch is now your winch . the only difference is mine has a way cooler emblem and is half assembled

wow thats a cheap price on the motor , i burnt mine out the local rewind shop wants 200$ for another one i have a perstolie on mine .
