Pics for replacing heater core? (1 Viewer)

I ended up disassembling the entire system and replacing the foam gaskets which were disintegrating, but yours may be in better shape. I have pics in my build thread (see sig) posts 170 and 171. There are direct links on in the first post of the thread.

Thanks for the pics. That really helps out. I'll have to get some of that foam duct tape. Mine are pretty worn out too.

More pics.

What's the little box with the blue knob for?:hmm:

I was going to do this 2 years ago to replace the 1 tube that goes from the core through the firewall. (I have the last two tubes available anywhere!). I gave up when I got to this stage of dash dis-assembly. It was just too difficult.

Anyway, be careful with the tubes as they are not replaceable with new parts. There are also some small O-rings that seal the tubes to the core-make sure you have those. Good going for attempting this.

Drew, are you saying that Toyota doesn't make the tubes anymore?! [Rigger puts head in hands] Yeesh, if the tubes need to be replaced, you'd about have to buy another Cruiser to get 'em. No one parting out a Cruiser would be willing to go thru all this just to sell you the tubes for $10 plus shipping!

Ducks, the pics are great. Thanks for educating me. How do the tubes connect to the core? Give us some close-ups of that.

That's what I'm saying. I bought the last 2 in the world, at least according to Cruiserdan. I was buying them since I mashed one of them taking off a heater hose with pliers. I was able to get it back into shape and so didn't end up replacing it.

There are two tubes that are part of the core that come off and connect to the two tubes that run through the firewall. It makes sense when you see it. I'll try and get a picture when I put it back together. Right now I'm trying to yank the core out of its plastic encasing. It has a death grip on it. Trying to pull it out without breaking the plastic box.

Ouch, that blows. Where did you get the heater core so we can avoid it?

What a rotten turn of events!! Sorry to hear it, man.

As Drew says, tell us who sold you that thing.

Heater cores are the pits, man.

I keep thinking that there has to be a way to improve this whole system. I wonder if a guy could retrofit a core in from another rig, or something.

In post 17 it looks like there is some algae is on the carpet. Did you have a leak somewhere?

:censor: !! The tubes don't fit into the aftermarket heater core that I have. I'm ordering the OEM, which is ridiculously expensive but I have to have something quick that will work for sure.

Sorry to hear that, I bought the cheapest I could find from autozone online and the factory tubes fit in fine. I decided on a different way to seal the core and factory lines since I don't like the single clip design to keep tension on that o-ring to seal those tubes. I'd much rather have a solid line design instead of these two piece designs.

Ducks, can you take some more pictures of that heater box? All sides? I’m trying to understand how it relates to the dash and firewall. I keep thinking that there has to be a way to cut into the box and pull the core out without tearing the dash apart.

If you don’t mind my thinking out loud on your thread, it’d sure be nice if there was a way to get a more commonly-available (less expensive) heater core and retro-fit it in. Nix those danged tubes and run the heater hoses straight in to the core. Now is when I’d like to have another FJ62, a rusted-out derelict that I could use as a guinea pig. I could pull that heater box out and experiment on it.

My interest in all this is that I suspect my core is plugged, too, so I may have to go through this whole exercise!!

My heater core leaked catastrophically. My wife was driving it and steam just came boiling out of the vents. Kind of sucked. Wasn't exactly sure where it came from initially. I had a radiator I had been meaning to put in. So I just replaced the radiator, water pump, fan clutch, and thermostat.

On a side note, my fj60 overheated on the freeway today. Steam came rolling out from under the hood. I was supposed to drive it up to Oregon tomorrow. Now that isn't happening. Don't know why it overheated. I'm going to have a cruiser mechanic look at it and probably fix it for me. :censor:!

It's the AC Amplifier and it controls at what RPM the AC kicks on at.

is there a way to adjust that to get better mileage??? Cause as soon as i turn on the A/C i can watc the mileage drop.

Also, how much would rebuilding the heater core run? Is it worth the hassle if i get mostly-hot air out of the heater?
