Hi guys I just picked up an 85 with a 22re that has a bunch of oil leaks .The main leak appears to be the rear main and either the rear of the valve cover or the head gasket.
Truck seams to runs fine , oil doesn't appear to have any coolant in it, coolant doesn't appear to have any oil in it.Seems to have decent power for stock gears and 33's.

I plan on ordering a complete gasket set, New head bolts, OSK timing chain set with metal guides, Aisin water pump, new thermostat, Also figure on sleeving the rear crank and the damper just cus.

This is my first 22re , is there anything else I should consider doing while I am resealing and replacing the timing chain set on the engine? Any other parts I should pick up?,

I'm really trying to get this completed in a weekend. So any advice on extra parts to have on hand would be appreciated . This needs to be a reliable daily driver.
Thanks

Lets see some pics! In AZ it may not be rusty.

Issues I had with mine in 10 yrs of ownership were clutch slave cylinder, front axle rebuild and Mass air sensor. Not related to your question though. 3.0 gets all the hate for blown head gaskets but it happens with these 22REs too. What's your MPG? Mine was about 19 with 30 inch tires. Power wasn't great, but then who cares?

Figured on doing a front end rebuild, well at least the knuckles out., as it seems to have an inner
seal leak. Just bought it last week so I dunno on mileage. I have never had a truck with such a bad oil leak. It used abou quart in 100 miles and coated the underside pretty good. Spent about 8 hours pressure washing and degreasing it. Also power was kinda surprising, at least in lower gears considering stock gear ratio and it's on 33's. Hoping that's a good sign on condition.

The previous owner had it for 2 years and claimed the guy he bought it from had rebuilt it. We shall see.

Your worst oil leak is most likely the front crank shaft seal. I used to lose that much oil. The oil pump is right behind that seal so all that pressure is against that seal. Pretty quick and easy to replace. Do that first will probably fix 90% of your leaks.

All the leaks are at the rear of the engine actually, front is dry.

That’s the TARC* system in full effect!

If you don't have one already, go download a fsm (factory service manual). They are easy to find for free with a google search.

Are you planning on doing the head gasket? If so, spend the extra $25 on an OEM gasket. In fact, I recommend OEM gaskets/seals all around. I used an aftermarket set on my rebuild and every single gasket and seal leaked.

While you are in there, you might want to replace your IACV coolant hoses. I would also get a new fan clutch. They can be refurbished with fresh oil, but considering the price of a new Aisin unit from rockauto, it isn't worth it, IMO.
