High gas prices, big pain for no gain, rather than drive decided to do some Lexi work, suspension refresh with some driveline items.
The so called ABS sensor (pulled both) sure took me for a ride and ruined better half of my day. 3 hour school for the driver side and one hour for the passenger side. Took less than that to sawzall both control arms - so be prepared for the PITA challenge.
Tips for removing frozen sensor, if it does not go easy do not force it.
Hub must come out or you would break it. Must have access from the inside of the knuckle. Drilling it out not my cup of tea I would worry about shavings inside the hub. Must have 39mm 12p ? socket and new cotter pins.
Spray lots of rust penetrant day prior, remove sensor bolt and light plastic tapping try to get sensor to turn, it would budge and if not spray and wait longer, spray again, spin around do not pull away, little by little you would get it moving up to full circles but it would not come out - this is where hard work begins.
For pulling screw hole must point down (per manual) but for spinning and twisting it would not matter. Once you get 1/4circle or more it is time for picking.
90 degree pick may work but I bent my straight pick to some 75-80 degrees. See photo
Stick the tip behind the non sensing side of the sensor and keep digging while spinning the sensor.
It is all rust inside, scratch good and flush with WD-40. See pic of what would come out.
Repeat all the way to full circles but every flush pull (bolt hole down) and you would notice a progress. Keep repeating as it may take a good hour until it would very easily come out, do not force it, Wd 40 would run cleaner when rust is out.
For reinstall use lots of grease so next time you can pull it out without removing the hub - that was my goal as I was already there. Do not break he sensor - Toyota price is $234 but aftermarket’s are significantly cheaper.
