I am building a 1963 fj45 with 1978 fj donor truck for the 2f n drivetrain

Is there any way to make the 1978 pedal assembly, steering wheel colum , and m steering box or do I need a 1963/64/65/66 pedal assembly, steering wheel colum, and m steering box

obviously the 1978 has a huge pedal assembly and harness attatchment and the 78 steering wheel colum wont match to the firewall

any suggestions or do I need the earlier yr parts to match correctly

looking for a thread on swapping 2f and drivetrain into a older 40 series

The two vintages are not interchangeable. If you go with the 78 parts, you'll need to do some light fabrication.

or you could change/cut out the firewall section and piece in the 78. then it should all bolt up.

pedal assembly, steering wheel/colum and steering box

I understand the 63 and 78 and not interchangeable, should I be using 78 or 63 pedal assembly with my 63 fj45 2f drivetrain. which will be easier to match? which will require more fab work? I am 95% finished the build so cutting the nicely painted firewall is not the best option!.

will the 1978 or 1963 steering wheel/colum work better?. the 78 does not fit to the firewall as I have alreay tried. I have access to a 64 wheel/colum but didnt know if its worth picking up?

I would use the 78 pedal assembly and firewall section. steering column is your preference. I'm going to graft in a 78 firewall and pedal assembly in mine here shortly and retain old column. The pedal throws are different on the old vs new and to get the proper throw for a newer safer master it is the best option if you are into the truck that far. if your not into the truck that far Mark Algazy sells a nice adapter to go from 3 bolt to 4bolt boosted brakes.

pedals

I am using a 65 colum/box/wheel as it fits in easy, but I am to far into it to cut the firewall. I was told by 1tontoy(mud) that I could use the 78 pedalsx3 but put a wedge shape fabed piece behind the entire box that holds the brake and clutch and extend the rod for the gas pedal? I am totally lost with these 3 pedals. any pics would help. I am really hoping to use the 78 entire assembly as I dont have a early style set in good shape. I had a entire 78 fj40 donor so I used every part etc from the 2f foundation

To the best of my knowledge this https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj45-owner...-67-central-american-model-4.html#post3262284 is the ONLY way to do both the proper pedal bucket etc. etc. AND the old column.

As far as I'm concerned staying with the old '63 or whatever brakes are an accident waiting to happen!!

I wanted the dual circuit front disc and the old school look and that's what I'll have when all is said and done.

pedals x3

thanks for that link it is very cool how they cut the firewall. at this point I am to far into the build and just want the 78 pedals to fit some how. I solved the steering as I used the older style colum/box/ and wheel.

Is there any thread on a wedge some1 has made to make the brake and clutch pedal fit properly, and also I was told to extend the rod on the gas pedal assembly and that will solve the 3rd pedal.

If any1 can verify this or give me some direction or measurements that would b incredible. I only need pedal advice and to late to cut and hack firewall.

I wasnt planning on using any 63 brake parts as I upgraded to front discs and jp booster adaptor( that is a piece of sh-t)as it is not fitting properly with my newer brake booster

Aloha

Now you know why we cut and hack the firewall :) That is my truck by the way, thanks for the compliments!!

How does the brake master and carb work or have you got there yet? They tend to want to occupy the same physical space when using the spacer.

spacer

yep, the new booster hits the new carb. what a piece of crap the booster spacer is, wasted 100+ duty etc!!! on it because it said would make the conversion hassle free. well guess they fooled me and got my $. now I am stuck using only 1 senser instead of the 2 n plugging the other hole on the end of the master

never again

I thought the 78 pedal assembly is wider between the clutch-brake than the non boosted models?
so in using the 78 stuff, you'd need to modify the firewall anyway. or am I missing something?
if you have rear disc, you could use the mid 70's,I think, corvette master.

The LV fire wall should be close to yours here is what I did using the 66 pedel assy the ugly adapter 73 FJ40 booster with a 83 FJ 40 brake master the master is set up for disk on the front and drum on the rear its shorter than the earlier masters and my stock air cleaner fits without a problem

I would use the stock pedals and steering column. You can get everything you need to operate your front disk brakes and such with the stock items and still clear the carb. Mark at Mark's Offroad has an adapter so you don't need to cut the fire wall and he can put you in the right direction for a brake master as well. Also Man-a-fre has a kit as well.

The distance is the same no matter which adapter you use, I went with the one from JT Outfitters. and if you check my thread 90 day build you will see i also upgraded the steering box to a later model getting rid of the clamp on box. I am still playing with a few other ideas but so far everything has worked out great. you will find going to a later steering box will take some work because the column wont line up but if machine the pedestal it will depending what year box you use

78 pedals

Hey scott(eco)

all I have is 1978 pedal assembly, can I make this work easily?

I figured out the steering issue and now set on that.

1 ton toy said I should b using the 78 pedals since I have a brand new 78 carb with a rod not a cable. therefore I can extend the rod. Is this correct? he also mentioned he used a wedge shape piece of fab steel to mount the pedals to the wall since the 1960yrs are diff than the later yr firwalls

mannn this is difficult as every 1 has different answers. like I said I cant cut the firewall at this point I just want the 78 pedals to easily work somehow lol

this is what 1 ton toy said I should do as he has done this before and I want this to go smoothy and easy with little $ spent as I have all the 78 donor fj40 parts

(I put a 78 2F drivetrain (from a fj55) into my 66 FJ45 LWB pickup about 3 years ago. You have to consider your carb. Does your 2F carb use a cable or rod? If it's a cable, I would use the 63 pedal assembly.

If not, then you have to use the 78 assembly or change your carb linkage.

In my situation, my carb used a rod - like what you see on FJ60's (in my opinion a better design). So, I used the associated pedal assembly and modified rod linkage. The firewall where the pedal mounts on a 63 is NOT flat, while the firewall is flat on the 78. So, to make the pedal work, I made a small adapter/spacer that allowed me to mount my 78 pedal (flat) to the 66 firewall. The adapter was more-less a wedge-shape.

99.9% sure the LV firewall is the same as the pickups - the pedals are all the same.

I would use the 63 steering column and steering box if you can get it. Otherwise you'll have to modify the firewall or build and adapter for the 78 column to mount.

hope this helps. )

Is this the route I should be going?

I am in western Canada, to b honest I dont know exactly what pedals are fitting and what is not fitting, I just want the best mud advice when using my 78 fj40 pedals in my 63fj45. Just want to know the easiest steps when I go and help tomorrow.

I will try and post pics, I bought the new carb off of mud from marshell trollholes if that helps with picture and the rest is all 78 fj40 donor matched to a 63 fj45
