Panasonic Toughbook Extreme... thoughts? (SOLD)

Thoughts on this Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 Rugged Extreme Laptop?

It is my posting and is for sale... I have two, this was bought for a friend who couldn't produce the funds after I purchased it. If you click on the pics, it takes you to craigslist with all the info on it. You see these in police cars all over the city btw.

I have got the other setup with GPS software and my plan is to use it as a GPS unit in my Rover when I get to off-roading. It's also durable, water resistant, and military spec'd.

Just curious. I have finally been getting back to people, but I am curious to know if there would be any interest :) Never hurts to try as many avenues as possible when selling something :)

Always open to reasonable offers as well :) They don't come up much for sale here, and I've had a few low ball offers of $250-$300... there are some cheaper CF-48's on Craigslist for $300... not as tough, or as powerful.

BTW, the memory can actually be maxed out at 768MB. I made one error on the listing it is a Pentium III 600MHz, not a 800MHz, but that makes very little difference in terms of what it is used for.

Runs Photoshop 7 great, and the touchscreen is brilliant, but takes some getting used to... you don't have to worry about being gentle!

I do recall a video with a Hummer H1 driving over one.:bounce: If anyone wants more pics, or even a small video of the touchscreen send an email or pm.

cool looking case.

I wish Mac's would come out with a tough version. I really cannot stand Microcrap.

i am getting one of these from a telus internal sale , mine will be a little older and slower though i believe its a cf 27 with a 400 mhz processor and and wireles b ! i will load it with as much archived cruiser info as i can .

Toynut, stick with Windows 2000! I believe that the CF-27 only allows 192MB of memory as a maximum. Great find btw!

yes just picked it up, it has a wireless b card , running 2000 service pack 4 , pII 400mhz with a whopping 6 gig hard drive  , usb 1.0 , 3.5 floppy with wich i will replace asap with whatever i can find hope fully a dvd drive .

i dont have a wireless network at home so im using a usb thumb drive to transfer files :frown: .

picked it up for $125 , working battery ! i might sell it though its a little slow !

Depends on what you use it for. There is always a trade-off with portable computers, and what it was meant for.

You can always up the HD (since it's 6GB it's only a 4200rpm model) to a nice 40GB 5400rpm with built in 2MB cache, which would easily speed it up by about 10-20%. Up the memory (dirt cheap now), and you are off to the races.

It's not worth the money to buy an internal CD or CDRW for them, they still go for $100 USD on eBay. Cheaper to buy an external DVD+-RW with enclosure for $50 and a USB 2.0 PCMCIA adapter that will give you 4 USB 2.0 ports.

I can not stress enough that these are utilitarian in nature, and meant for field work, outdoor work, and the military. They are awesome for inside a vehicle since they can easily deal with a bumpy road while running, where most laptops would de destroyed or have a fatal hard drive crash. Mud? Water? Never fear with the toughbook! For outdoor use, what more does speed do?

The newest models have everything even a swivel touch screen, but have a whopping $4000 USD price tag!

Ahhhh... my rant is over :bounce: I feel much better now

nice and slow just like my cruiser . quick question on the wire less b card do i need to have a wireless conection at home or can i use it in hot spots ?

Try it out at home... you may get lucky and be able to use your neighbours' wireless network if they have left it unencrypted, my nephew apparently does ;)

It should work at any hot spot, as long as there is no encryption (password) to get on the network.

Is it built in, or is it a PCMCIA card for the wifi?

Seriously though, for that deal, I'd suggest you throw a larger and faster Hard Drive in it... you will notice a considerable difference. I'd also maximize the memory for the full 192MB! Windows 2000 should speed along quite nicely :bounce::bounce2:

A S thanks for the help , you are right this is a great little computer if i had more to spend i would have bought your and resold this one , my wireless b is using pcmcia card , do i need a specific hard drive made for laptops ? also i found a web site sugesting i could up gade my ram to 340 meg's , the 64 on board plus a 256 in the one free slot all though i saw the specs that referance 192 as well , thanks again for the help , i will get my friend who works at a used computer store to look for a used internal dvd drive for me , i just want to have my kids be able to watch movies while camping , i would also like to know more about the gps thing do you have any links ? thanks again what do you recomend for a inverter while traveling ? i think i will also try and make a hard mount for my cruiser !

Correction, you are correct with regards to the memory! I'd be careful about the memory though, as the older laptops are finicky with the cheap stuff from most computer shops. Hey, it's worth it to buy it from Crucial.com because it is tested and guarenteed working, just get it shipped over to Point Roberts' "The Letter Carrier", customs doesn't seem to gouge you too much if you show them your receipt.

GPS is simple. Get MS Streets & Trips 2007 + one USB GPS mouse + Laptop = GPS laptop in the vehicle.

You can also use Garmin's Topographic Mapsource program instead of MS Streets & Trips with the free nRoute software to be used with Garmins' Mapsource for GPS. Since I like to do a lot of out of the way camping and such, I'm using the Garmin Topo Canada software.

If you build a mount for it... share pics please :D

I should mention one thing about using the Garmin software, they have a free software download that does voice recognition and voice prompts for direction called Garmin nRoute which is free to download and works with any existing Garmin mapsource program you have!

If you plan on using Garmin software I forgot to mention that only Garmin GPS receivers work with their software, but never fear... GPSgate 2.0 allows any GPS receiver to work with the Garmin protocol and software.

Built the docking station into the truck, and put a 120g hd in it. Also put a 4 line blue LCD display on the parallel port so I can see what music is playing even when the screen is blank to save power. Still a work in progress, but it's taken crazy abuse. at $300 a pop you can have a spare, just clone the hard drive once it works well. Winamp has amazing sound processing plugins so you can fine tune the sound for your truck. I can clone what I have if anyone is interested, Windows 2000 pro now, will run XP, but I can't flip the display if I do (since it's mounted upside down I have to do that).

SquamSquatch... PICS please! That is a nice system!

I'm trying to figure out how to fit an arm mount (just like the police cars) as I've seen a few companies selling them online.
