Hi friel01,

How about the drivers side, I am tight between the exhaust and the steering shaft and the power steering is a little close to the steering shaft too. I am also a little tight at the rear of the transfer case and the floor board. The last area would be up front at the radiator and front pully but yours looks like you have plenty of room up front. Thanks and you are doing one hell of a job!

Cheers,

room

I dont have as much room up front as that picture looks like. Its just the picture angle.
I have maybe 1" clearance, and that is using the low profile spal fan.
I clearanced (i.e. 'cut a big chuck out of') the floor of the cab to make room for the transfer case, that solved that issue. Since it is an automatic, it pushed the transfer way back, and since I am column shifting it, and using the vacuum 4wd shifter, no floor linkage issues to deal with with that.

I will try to get some shots of drivers side. Using a remote resevoir PS pump, so the pump is small and I think doesnt interfere with steering, but I will have PS hoses everywhere due to the hydroboost brake booster set up (havent finished plumbing yet).

The engine is a LS1 out of a 98 camaro. The AC and alternator have been moved up top, andthe engine cover is from the Austrailian version (the Holden), modified to fit. I thought it looked good and made it rather unique. It is only rough fit right now, I have some pretty-up work to do on the cover.

So we both are kind of in the same boat. I have not cut the floor board yet but may have to. I also may have to make new mounts for the power steering but that is not a big deal. The exhaust is where I would like more room. I may decided to add another universal joint to the steering shaft. I would like to keep the COG as low as possible and moving the motor higher will compromise that a little. I am using an older 350 SBC so the short block should be about the same as yours. There are way too many ways to skin this cat. Thanks for your comments.

Cheers,

Jim

I woudl say I extended the tranny cutout by about 4 inches to clear the tranfer case. I re-braced it under the floor to keep it strong. Then I extended the tranny hump by the same four inches. I had two humps to cut and splice, but that part is all under the seats anyway, so it doesnt have to be that pretty if you dont have a spare hump to chop.

more pics for ironman

I dont think I can be much help to you on the exhaust clearance, here is a shot, you can see the LS1 factory headers are very snug to the block and dump pretty much straight down, within the frame rails, well out of the way of my steering.

Also a pic of the steering shaft to PS pump clearance (looks like my hoses will stratle it, or I might put a more curved fitting and route both under the steering shaft.

and finally a more realistic view of my radiator fan to waterpump clearance.

Thanks friel01,

The close ups were great. You are doing better than I am. Next time you are taking pictures please take one of your modifications to the floor board. I would be interested in seeing how far you had to go back. I am also using an auto trans and that does make the fit tighter. But it sure is nice for an old guy just being able to slip in into drive. :steer: My other 4x4 has a manual and that is fun to drive but an auto makes it sooooo easy.

Cheers,

Jim

I cant really take a pic of the floor mods now since the tranny hump is installed. But here is a pic from when I was bedlining it, you can see I actaully cut too much, then patched back some. I wasnt too worried about the patch being pretty, it is well covered, and wont be seen.

I am leaning more and more toward this type of modificatoin. I was thinking of trying to cut out the lip and just moving it about two inches back then welding it back in place. Is that about what you ended up with? Two inches would help but three inches might be better.

Your picture helps out thank you.

Cheers,

Could you give us more information on your A/C setup please? Is it Vintage Air, or a different company? Is it a universal application or one that you made fit? does it double as heat/defrost as well?

Do you have a part number? I'm enjoying your build and your 45 is going to be a rocket with that motor in it.

AC

the AC unit is from Classic Auto Air
Street Rod | OEM Factory Air Conditioning Parts & Restoration Services

it is their street rod model. basically the same as Vintage air as near as I can tell. Yes, it is both Ac and heat and defrost. But keep in mind it only fits under the dash because I have my firewall pushed forward. Otherwise it will sit flush witht he front of your dash, and since the ac vents come out of hte front of hte unit, you wont be able to route the vent hoses. By flattening my firewall, I pushed the whole thing back a couple inches, and have room to route the vent hoses up into the dash and over where I want them.

Thanks for the info. I can't wait to see the finished product.
