The gf and I have gone to the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula a bunch of times and now we want to head over to the Pacific side where the temps are cooler this time of year.

Where is good south of Ensenada? 3-5 hours south of the border is what we're looking for.

Just south of Ensenada about 20-30 minutes you can take the dirt road to the fishing village of Santo Tomas. It's a nice little village tucked away in bay with plenty of diving and fishing opportunities. There is also a winery very close on the main road you can visit.

Another option is if you go a little further south you can take the road to Erendira where there is a hostel to stay at Coyote Cal's Mexico Hostels and get in some surfing nearby at Punta Cabras. I stayed at Coyote Cal's 2 years ago and it is a good place to camp or you can camp right on the beach at Punta Cabras.

I would avoid the area around Colonet which is another 1-2 hours south of Erendira unless you are just driving through. Last I heard was this area is one of the stopping points and hubs for the narcos before they bring the drugs across the border.

+1 for Cabras. I also like camping on the peninsula at San Quintin, the old boats on the cliff at Quatro Casas, and surf camping on the cliffs at Punta San Jose. All are a pretty easy drive in one day.

That sounds like an amazing trip. Let me know when the next one is.

Thanks to this forum I'm heading to Coyote Cals on Friday. I'll report back with pics on the fun.

Any good offroading in the area? According to my Baja Almanac it seems like there are quite a few dirt roads around there.

That is an understatement my friend. Baja is still Baja for the most part and dirt roads are the majority not the minority. The term good off roading seems a bit of a contradiction of terms. To me most any dirt road is good, I'm sure the locals who use these roads for daily travel don't consider them good just a necessary evil. Most of the well traveled dirt roads are nasty washboards that will eat up your ride if your rig isn't up to snuff and you don't air down. Check the battery tie downs and have fun...I'm jealous.

If you want to take the "Alternative" route to Erendira and Coyote Cal's there is a dirt road starting at Santo Tomas on the main road that takes you through the hills and drops you down to the coast. The road starts just past the store with the picture of Fidel Castro smoking a cigar on the front. There are no signs where the road is but you can see it snaking up the side of the hill so just take the first dirt road that heads in that direction.

Use the Baja Almanac for reference to find the split in the road I think about 8-10 miles in. The road to the right (north ) takes you to Punta San Jose another popular surf spot, the road to the left (south) takes you to Punta Cabras and Coyote Cal's.

Although not technical it is a fun way to see the country and get you in the baja mindset. Like Scott said air down and have fun.
