The patient:
1997 3x Locked, 317K mileage but the engine was completely rebuilt at 198K by @powderpig who did an amazing job. Have never had a problem with the rebuild.
In April, I was driving to the airport early in the morning and felt the engine begin to hesitate as I was coming to a stop. Put it in neutral and then pressed on the gas and it felt like stepping on the gas wasn't getting the engine going. Stepped on it again, and then was able to move and park. After my trip, drove home and didn't have a problem. But, a few days later, was driving and you can hear and then smell that something was wrong. Never threw a code. I have an Accu Gauge and never saw a code. I took it to a very reputable Toyota Service shop in Centennial Colorado. Here is the description:
"Intermitant misfire in #5 Cylinder. Tech boroscoped the #5 Cylinder and did not see any signs of fluid leak in the cylinder. Performed compression check on all cylinders and compression was in spec. Inspected valve adjust and all valves are in spec. Swapped #5 and #1 fuel inject to see if misfire will change cylinders, if it does not, next step will be inspect #5 Vale Springs.
They replaced Spark Plugs with Toyota and the Ignition Wire Set. The misfire did not change cylinders. They also replaced the Cap and Rotor . They drove it for 42 miles and then had five cold starts. The engine did not misfire. Recommend Customer Drive until Problem Come Back.
A few weeks later: Maybe unrelated, but on the weekend, was coming down a very corrugated road and my engine just stalled. Shut off completely. I was able to pull over and then restart the truck with no problem. Got out to see if I had some battery terminal issues but everything was tight. Drove home... Driving back from the airport again, the truck hesitates on the highway as I come home. Can smell exhaust or gas and finally throws the P0305 Code.
Took it to the shop and they suspect a #5 Valve Spring may be broken. I don't understand how it in intermittently work fine and then not work but I can't find out how the valve spring actually works.
I also asked them to look that maybe there was some electrical short somewhere as well and they said they couldn't find anything. So, they will be replacing the #5 Cyclinder valve spring.
If there is any advice that this community could provide that I can pass on to the mechanics, that would be awesome. Thank you!
