Well, we learned something, anyway!

Cruiserwanted asked what went in that bracket on the driver's side of the radiator support mount (3rd pic). I haven't seen one before, but it looks like a beer can would fit in there nicely. Anyone else have an Idea?

That is a great idea dave. Maybe I will place a blue moon in there and see if a guy with a pretty sweet shop will come along and place a OEM overflow tank on my cruiser. :D

Cruiserwanted - that suare tank is OEM and original. I had one like it on my '72 when I bought it new. There used to be an oulet hose as well to carry overflow down below the engine. I thought it had a metal bracket sround the neck to hold it to the side of the radiator support...

Mike S. Does the bottle from the 72 that I posted above look like what you have? It has the collar around the neck like you describe.

I dont have an overflow tank on my 1970 FJ40. I dont know why. was it an option or something? o well. it works fine the way it is

IDave: Since I sold my '72 in 1985, I can't easily check it out. The tank you posted looks close to original, but I think cap is not. There may be a bunch of variation - dunno. It should be turned arouind and mounted on the radiator support post. Is that the horn that is mounted there next to it - where the tank ought to be?

Mike S

Mike S.,
Yep that's the horn. Would the cap be a two holer? Was it red like Cruiserwanteds? Or was it white/plastic? I agree that the horn should be mounted on the fenderwell.

IDave: The picture that Cruiserwanted looks correct- I don't remember the color of the top, but it had two tubes one in, one out. They probably made variations over the years?

The plastic bottles eventually get brittle and are prone to cracking. Mudrak had to replace the windscreen bottle in my 60 recently when he leaned on it and it cracked. The caps eventually turn to crap as well, so you could see about anything in an older 'cruiser.

Mike,
Guess that's the question. OEM, or not? I have absolute assurances, but not proof, of bottles before 1975 being either aftermarket or OEM, depending on who you ask.
For sure, they were either not there, or they were!

:D

Well that narrows it down. lol.

IDave - I drove mine out of the dealer lot, brand new, in 1972. It had a overflow bottle on it. Was it OEM or did the dealer install it? I never asked. Looks to be like the radiator post has a factory fixture to accomodate it, tho'.

Mike S

Now that, Mike, is something I hadn't heard before. And exactly what I was looking for when I started this post. I am glad to know it. Now I can continue my search knowing that there is such an animal out there!

Dave
