I believe the guy looking for the input gear is Australia. He is also looking to convert from a four speed to a three speed. PTO gear are one of those hard to find parts. The piece of the OD that fits on the transmission tailshaft are another. I have eight boxes of ODs and parts stored away but the pieces for the input shaft are very limited. The splined section is fairly short which helps speed up the wear. The four studs used to mount the OD on the transfer case are very hard to locate. The two new complete ODs have been sold the one separate used PTO I bought thru a third party I went back to the original seller and replaced those four studs one at a time and installed new bolts. I know they are transfer case out there with four studs still installed when the OD was removed. It was a summer date in Phoenix when I pulled studs. Vehicle was parked on Asphalt. Luckily the double nut trick worked and they came out fairly easy.

Fairey OD2 doesn't requires any driveshaft mods including the PTO driveshaft.
 
Have you guys watched any Abom79 or Keith Rucker vids. They make gears. Have a good gear - measure it out. Draw it up in fusion360 and have it machined, heat treated. Way to expensive for 1 gear but make a dozen or two I'd bet the cost is less than twice the cost of an off the shelf comparable gear. Something to think about. Look at the success that guy had making 73 back up light lens.
 
That windy hill foundry guy does cast iron casting's. I myself did cast aluminum stuff in high school back in the 70's. Now with 3d printing, lost PLA techniques could prototype stuff quickly making whole units. I doubt there are any patents to contend with.

The issue is the up front cost. Doubt more than a couple people would want one and would be years before the rest got sold. When I bought the bulk of the ODs parts from vendor no longer going to work on them it was not much more than scrap metals prices. I'm sure I'vr sold enough parts to cover my initial investment. But probably been thirty years. Not a wise investment. But that was never my intention.
 
I agree completely. Someone here sells a little (big) glass window for a old carb for like $350. Well I'd never buy one at that price, $50 maybe, $5 for sure If I had that carb. Don't get me wrong I'm very happy they are suppling a non-obtainium part for the purest.

So the answer is to figure out/poll if there would be a market for say 50 whole OD units at X price.
 
I saw something once on Jay Leno’s garage…it was a 3d scanner and then made the part in steel…but I don’t know if Jay would let you borrow it. On the other hand, he is a car guy so it’s probable

As mentioned in the discussion here, the Fairey may not actually be mythical. However it still is pretty much obsolete out of production and unobtainable. If you were to manage to clear those 3 hurdles and have one to install in your vehicle, if anything ever broke on it or wore out, chances are you would be back to searching for unobtainium.

The Fairey man himself has joined the discussion and I'm fairly confident you would not find anybody with more knowledge of or access to these unit.

It really is not a matter of which od unit is better. They are different and serve different needs and purposes.


Considering that by simply swapping in 370 gears and 35 inch tires, you can significantly overmatch the power of your stock F engine for running down the highway, or even moving around town without being sluggish as hell... especially with the three speed transmission... In my opinion you are chasing rare and hard to find boutique pieces which will be not be any cheaper than they are available for no real gain in function.

That sounds about right. I know that one of the calls looking for odd parts I have taken recently was out of Oz, and I think it was him.

Yes I cut mine and lengthened it. It is just hallow pipe I just put a piece of solid rod in the space and welded it. Very easy job.

Thank you. I think you are right. And, I don't "plan" on taking any really long trips on the interstate. So I'll focus more on the other stuff. I have been thinking about running bigger tires. Is 35 about the biggest you can go on the stock wheels? I wonder how wide of a tire the wheels will hold?
 
Stock wheels are only 5 1/2" wide with a 15" diameter. Your choices are very limited. 33x10.50 is about the most common choice.
