Great pics, thanks for sharing !

P.S. Whats up with your hood spacing in 2 of those pics ? One near the end, and one with the gravel like hill ...

I drove the cruiser like that when I am in the woods. Beside bad side effects, have good side effects to :hillbilly:. Is keeping the engine cooler.
The New York Police and cab driver are doing like this in the hot summer too and is working.

Yes, I can give you more info in a real time, send a pm.
Also you can check with this guys if you will like to have the official map Back Country Maps . However, you need to have a extra map/s with each forest service region.

The route starts on the Santiam Highway at the Hoodoo, Big Lake junction ( near with Mt Jefferson ) and ends in California at Dorris, a small town on HWY 97. The route will pass most of the west slopes of the Oregon Cascades and the view is amazing. Is like the time is stopping when you are there.

Thanks for the info. I was looking for something just like this, but instead of OR, after some research, we are going to do the Washington Back Country Discovery Route. Your info helped helped a lot. Thanks for posting!

You are welcome!
That route I am looking to do too.
Actually, I was looking to make my one route from Oregon to Canada border, because in inside to Canada is not legal to have a gun and I am not living the house with out my tool.
When you have in mind to do this route? This year probably is all ready late, the snow will show up at 4000 feet next week for 3 days. But, in the other hand, little snow can be just more fun add to the trip:bounce:.

Good luck

Hmm, part of the route 1 to 2, I all ready did..... in August this year.
Get more the one map with you. Some roads will not show in the maps at all. Also, be ready maybe for some detours to. Some roads are open just for the summer time, but the forest service decided to keep them closed all year round for different reason. We have there every year ugly landslides over roads
And definitely, if you are there, take a detour and take 99 to Windy Ridge. The road is still open maybe for another month and after that will be close until next year probably in late June because of the snow. This year in 26 May we still had snowing there and most of the roads were closed until June 10 or something like that.
And of course don't forget to stop to see the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Multnomah Falls is a must to do because is in your way to Bridge of Gods to start your first route.
You can drive on historic hwy and not 84 for few miles and you will have a hand of water falls right there on hwy shoulder.

Actually, you can bring guns into Canada. There is a form (plus small fee) to fill out but it can only be a rifle or shotgun, no handguns. There is no way I am doing that route without some type of firearm. Not worried about animals, but I am WORRIED about people. Go to google and type in Canadaian firearm permit. I also have the form saved as a PDF file if you want it. Send me an email and I can forward it to you.

You right, people are always the problem and all my life I had been in the woods with really wolfs, bears and mountain lion with out any firearm and just a stick and no problem. But, the people where different then, the what is outthere on this days....
Will be nice a trip from Oregon all the way up deep in Canada and return back on I5.
Thanks

Hey Cowboy, nice post! How late in the year would you say you can you do that route before it becomes unpassable (or at least 'unreasonably challenging' :))? It's been on my list to do, you've inspired me!

Well, wait to see this week how will be with the snow, because for two days will be snow at 3000 feet (maybe just Mt Hood) and in the end the week will be another round of two or three days of snow and after that you can decide if you can leave. I believe it's not to late to do the trip. Only money is stop me to do the route 5 this year.
Usually in the end to the October can be expected snow on the trails around to Sisters. Plus, most of the trail will be up on 4000 feet altitude.
When I was camping near with Sisters, the temperature over night was in 20's and in the morning the ground was frosted, but was easy to drive over ice roads. Definitely your cruiser need to be prepare for cold weather and care a tarp with you to cover the hood over night. Will help the engine to stay warmer over night. I did like that and I felt the difference between the night when was in 20's and I didn't covered the hood and when I covered the hood on next nights.
PM if you need more info about rd condition, detours, where you can get gasoline and other info.

good luck

Howdy! I'm 'jonesing' to go on that route! All I need is some free time and decent weather. The latter, unfortunately, may come first! :crybaby:

The weather will get better in the end, time and money is the problem. Will be more detours now then usually after this weather and because of Elk hunting season (some of the OHV roads). Plus, almost all the gasoline station in the resorts are closed and you need to make detours to fill up in Sisters, Bend or Butte Falls.

( Crate Lake and Twin Lakes gasoline station got closed last week and Union Creek is not sealing anymore gasoline the who knows when in despite that is in OBCDR map..... )

Beautiful pics, thank you for posting them!
I flew over the Crater Lake in a plane in Feb this year, when visiting a childhood friend in California.
When I saw it, it instantly became one of those "gotta visit" -places. So amazingly beautiful!
