I recently bought my first land cruiser. I have limited knowledge with vehicles but this will primarily serve as a learning experience and weekend camping vehicle. I did take a mechanic with me to give it a once over before purchasing - he gave me the green light after being under the car for about 45 minutes. Here are some pictures of the undercarriage. Is it terrible or manageable?

It's not uncommon for the cover over the gas tank to look like that, not sure why it rusts more readily. But the rest, frame, etc. looks pretty good. I see more leaks than rust.
awesome. I knew the gas tank was hell and I've been shopping for replacements tonight. It's currently at a shop getting a once over and checklist. Here's what I sent to the mechanic -

Codes
  • C0210 - Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Signal Malfunction
  • C1223 - Malfunction in ABS System
  • C1340 - Open Circuit in Center Differential Lock Signal (During Center Differential Lock ON)
  • P0325 - Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Bank 1 or Single Sensor

Other Concerns
  • Passenger Front CV Axle Leaking. CV Axle is new.
  • Surface Rust
  • Fairly loud motor whirring when windshield wipers move
  • Exhaust manifold leak
  • Antenna motor can be removed
  • Viability of putting onboard air where the AHC was in the future?

Past Work
  • 3/10/21 - Replace left front axle
  • 1/29/21 - Replace rear link bars
  • 1/29/21 - Replace starter
  • 1/29/21 - Replace knock sensor intake gasket
  • 1/29/21 - Replace exhaust gasket on left side
  • 1/29/21 - Replace valve cover gasket and spark plugs
  • 11/3/20 - Replace window motor
  • 10/23/20 - Tires and alignment
  • 10/20/20 - Replace heater tee hose
  • 10/20/20 - Remove running boards
  • 10/20/20 - Greased driveline
  • 10/8/20 - Replace shocks and springs
  • 10/8/20 - Repair A/C
  • 10/10/19 - Replace front and rear brake pads
  • 10/10/19 - Replace right and left calipers and repair e-brake
  • 10/10/19 - left rear axle seat and machine rotor? Writing was hard to read
  • 10/4/18 - Painted
  • 12/22/16 - Replace right and left exhaust manifold, rear hatch latch, rear seat belt latch

So as long as I can sort this out and get it fairly reliable and safe I'll be happy. I've been searching for a local cruiser shop but the closest good one seems to be Atlanta. The mechanic I took with me worked primarily on apaches but still...

I just want to fly fish and watch my dogs play in the water. Thanks for making me feel better about this.

Dont forget your timing belt and waterpump, but this thing looks pretty good. Mine is similar if not more rusted underneath, but structurally sound and no leaks. I also know a guy willing to take care of my rusted body spot for 400-500 ish.
