Hi

My father has a 2000 Landcruiser 100 with I think 40,000 miles on it, mint condition . He’s elderly and wants me to have it. Several questions
1. I assume this is a good year for these? Is there anything that would need to be serviced like timing belt etc.
2. It has stability control so doesn’t have locking rear differential?
3. If I took out the second row seats or folded them forward, would this fit a couple 29” xl frame size long travel mountain bikes?
4. Any sense what it’s worth? It’s that green metallic type color with a tan color interior.
5. Most importantly, can the stereo be upgraded?

Sounds like your father has a unicorn and you should be thrilled to have it. If it only has 40,000 miles then the timing belt has never been done likely but due to age you should get it done immediately. Just get the ASIN kit that comes with the water pump as well. You’ll likely want to do other things such as the heater T’s since they’ll likely be brittle due to age. Maybe even some hoses. Give it a good inspection and dont be afraid to put a few $$ into it.

It wont have a rear locker but does have ATRAC which is a type of traction control that uses braking to limit wheel slip.

I’ve never put a mountain bike in the back of mine, but I would think if you remove the front wheel that would definitely not be a problem.

As far as value it could easily be $25-30K if its indeed a 1 owner with 40k miles. If that’s the case and your father gives it to you I would hang onto it forever and consider it priceless.

There are plenty of aftermarket stereo options with Apple CarPlay and such.

Thanks! Yes that low of miles, never paint work and I remember it driving off the dealer lot. He cherishes it and it was never his daily driver as he slays had different Prius’s etc where he would load the miles up. This was his aspirational one.

I sometimes wonder whether I’d rather get a 200 series for my mountain bike trips. (Move away from the 4 speed auto, more horsepower and safety features, etc). But it looks great.

I know he hasn’t done the tuning belt. He only drives it once a month to warm the engine up so just a few miles and then back in the garage.

I don’t have any experience with the 200 series, but I love my 2000 Land Cruiser and have no issues with the lower horsepower and the 4 speed. Only downside is the gas mileage. I would take your father‘s rig and cherish that thing, but that’s just me and to each his own. That said you would absolutely have no problem selling it. I feel like the 200 series are overpriced for what they are but then again thats just my opinion.

I’ve driven it plenty and never had issues with the transmission etc but nothing to compare it too in other LC’s. I do need a better sound though and use my waze nav! I should stay with it.

1. I had a 2000. Great car overall. It has the older 4 speed transmission but is totally fine. Expect 15mpg city and highway. The only challenge I had was a cracked exhaust manifold that was common in the early years of 100 series Land Cuisers. Total PITA to do yourself. You should definitely get the timing belt replaced. Do you have service records? Might need to change a lot of old fluids.
2. From what I remember, only the 1998 models had locking rear?
3. I had to take a wheel off my bike to fit mine. Size large. I’d recommend a 1UP USA hitch rack if you are shuttling and don’t need to lock it in the car. Or one of those 6+ vertical bike hanging hitch racks. All your buddies are going to want to pile in your Land Cruiser because you have 8 seats.
4. Check bringatrailer.com to see what they are going for with that kind of low mileage. Check out the questions that are usually asked at those auctions too.
5. Yep. It’s double-din sized and not tied to the HVAC controls. Tons of options. I’ve had good luck with a Sony unit with wireless Apple CarPlay in my similar sized old 4Runner.

I’ve got a 200 series now and used to have a 2000 LC. The 200 series is faster, has more room, better mpg, can tow more.

But if I were you, I’d hang onto the 100 series. It’ll make your father in law happy and it’s modern enough for road trips. Plus the armrests are better, the third row reclines further, and a mint aughties Land Cruiser is sub zero cool.

When I am feeling lazy and don’t want to put my rack on , I can fit any of my large mtn bikes (180mm travel fork ) in the back if I take the front wheel off.
Fold one of the seats up and roll it in backwards and then all good.

That 100 will be running far longer than a 200. Ive owned a 2000 and now an 06. The 2000 was rusty but is still driving as a daily with 300k. No engine or trans or diff issues.

The mountain bikes will fit, easier with the second row out. I just turn the handlebars (you have to). If youre doing trips, Id really want a rack. Personally, this is a keeper, literally forever, even if you doing love it. Since it's free, I would maintain and use it for special occasions and buy the truck you want for long trips. Keeping this low mileage will keep its value up, and in the future during a bubble, you'd get 100k...though dont use that money to buy some dumb new plastic truck.

Next and First, get some lanolin or wax on and in everything you can. Dont take it anywhere, and dont dare let anyone drill for access.

Congrats.

I was looking at sequoias and suburbsne and sprinters and siennas to keep 1 or 2 bikes inside (need 35” height or so) for longer trips (not rack on outside as worry about theft) and possibly to stretch out and sleep in back at a roadside stop. My father offered the land cruiser as he drives a suburu now. Id hate for it to be too special I can’t it. Sprinter van (newer 4 cylinder) seems complicated and worry where to get repaired if on road in remote area.

How prevent rust? Under carriage?

My father probably hasn’t done timing belt. Seems like that and water pump and thermostat etc should be done.

Exhaust manifold issues - none and no ticking and I assume that’s miles and rust related so good there.

Anything else to take care of? Replacing head unit and speakers not an issue if keep old head unit?

My father checked it just now and he was wrong, it has 54,000 miles on it.

I’ve decided to take it. Going to do the timing belt, water pump, thermostat as recommended and might as well have the oil changed including transmission and differentials. Anything else ?

Like to out in Anne’s head unit and amp/speakers provided the head unit change is reversible if want it stock.

I’d also like to upgrade the lighting if that makes any sense.

Sounds like a plan. I would baseline all fluids (oil, coolant, front/rear diffs, transfer case, trans, PS). Maybe some new spark plugs and heater T’s. Other that drive and enjoy and replace parts as you feel necessary.

Curious if you have any pictures of you can share? Its gotta be one of the lowest mileage 100 series around.

I will when I travel back to my folks. I’m 1,000 miles away. May ask my dad to take some photos but he’s not very good at that.

2. And 1999 MY had locking rear diff.
3. If you need some storage in the rear + want to keep the bike inside, you could just fold the middle PS seat forward, take the front wheel off, attach a front fork mount to a piece of wood, attach the front fork and store the bike along the PS of the vehicle. I used this for a number of out of state bike trips when I didn't want to lock the bike to a rack or didn't have a good place to store it inside a bldg.

I think my xl 29” wheel mountain bikes are too long now. I’ll gave to take one seat out and if I want to sleep back there take both out. So that’s my plan I think as I won’t carry more than one passenger.

Come on now. Don't be shy and share some pictures of the rig!
I will! I am not sure when I will be at my folk’s house to collect it as they are half the country away! Only photo I have is a bad interior one when I wanted to see if it had the navigation console as I’d like to swap that to get the non nav to put a more modern head unit in. Anyone have a mint one available?!
