Hey gents, I'd like a second opinion on our post-mortem analysis of ontherx's FJ60. He is a new member in the club and recently purchased a FJ60. Unfortunately, shortly after the purchase, the motor went. Symptoms included:
- low power
- bucking
- extreme backfiring through the intake

We took a compression test and found the following:

1-120
2-130
3-90
4-90
5-90
6-35

Over the weekend we tore it down and found a bunch of things wrong. Apparently the PPO (two owners ago) did a bunch of motor work, but did it all wrong.

I'll just lay out the pictures instead of explaining everything. Pictures should be self-explanatory.

One is not like the others. This is immediately after we took the valve cover off. We did not touch the valvetrain prior to this picture.

Another MAJOR problem is seen here.

Head doesn't look bad.

These pictures are all of cylinder #6.

Some other cylinders, in no particular order.

Gift to me! Sooooo good.

Give me your thoughts!!!!

That poor motor has been run hard and put up wet. Far more scoring than I would accept without a full tear down and re build. The missing adjuster on #2 leads me to ask where it ended up for one thing. I would assume that the intake and exhaust manifolds are warped and the head is not in great shape either. Going just on what I see, if it were my own truck there would be one of two paths, full ground up rebuild, most likely over bored or a transplant.

I'm with Stan on this one. Way too much damage seen and major questions about how and why and what other damage there my be.

In the valvetrain pic, you can see the adjuster nut, just barely. It's behind the pushrod.

Did you not see the pic with the broken intake manifold? We're way passed warped

Based on the fact that the head gasket was installed backwards by the last person who was in the motor, I don't trust this block at all.

the last pic makes up for all the heartache above

Agreed :D

Agreed completely. Too many unknowns to fix what's in there now.

I did see the crack, point being that they generally warp together, not just the intake or exhaust. I should have gotten a video.

You know where I stand on this stuff, out with the old, in with the new. I won't say the V word. ;)

Everyone thank you for the input. Johnny, I can't thank you enough for the support, mentoring, and appreciation of good beer. I'll post some pics from all the work I've done this far in a bit.

Here is our tentative list considering a rebuild using your more fresh block.
Are we forgetting anything?
  • Piston rings
  • Intake & exhaust manifold - src. cruiser parts / cruiser yard
  • Carburetor insulator
  • Radiator
  • T-stat and gasket
  • Toyota Head gasket
  • Toyota Valve cover gasket
  • Toyota Side cover gasket
  • Toyota Oil Pan gasket
  • Toyota oil pump
  • Toyota water pump
  • Napa fuel pump
  • Wires / plugs
  • Toyota ignition coil
  • Main and rod bearings
  • Desmog plug kit - mf
  • To machine - manifolds, block, head
  • Valve seals (machinist should have)
  • Front and rear main seals
  • Timing Cover gasket
  • Assembly lube
  • anti-seize
  • Using current head
  • Using Johnny's 2F Short block
Post rebuild
  • Water hoses
  • Carburetor or carb rebuild kit
  • Exhaust pipe cat back
  • Oil filter, oil, coolant
Game Plan
Stuff we will bring to the machinist:

  • camshaft
  • lifters
  • crankshaft
  • pistons+rods
  • block (JCs 2F)
  • head (current condition)
Stuff we will need him to do:
  • hot tank everything
  • magnaflux (check for cracks)
  • verify camshaft and lifters for usability (my motor does not have lifters, but it does have a camshaft)
  • check for true (head mating surface, manifold mating surface)
  • hone cylinders
  • plane head / block
  • valve job (replace valve seals, grind valves if necessary, grind valve seats)
